Scummer is a comparatively new word added to the English dictionary in recent times. However that meaning was a word used to describe workers breaking a strike in modern times. The word scummer was used to describe the difference between the merchant Navy and the Royal Navy probably dating back to the first world war. Nothing to do with breaking Pickett fences and the like. Certainly nothing to do with the strike and the breaking of it at all, that you may be referring to. It seems that because there is now a word that describes strike breakers and we are called scummers by the Pompey fans it has been associated with that strike of years ago. If that were true incidentally.......It would be the Pompey lot that would be called the scummers as it was they that broke the strike as it was Southampton Docks that were on strike!! Pompey was a warship harbour only in those days not a commercial dock. So again you do not know the history between us. If you wish to swell our gates with your presence to watch some decent "similar Norwich style football" then come down and enjoy yourself at st Mary's you will be welcome...wear a Norwich shirt if you want.....just be prepared for some very strange looks if you do........
I found it quite a coincidence that we sealed promotion at Fratton Park.We did so in the 1974/5 season also,an excellent day out on the South Coast.
