Yeah and black people can only shop on Mondays. Gays on Fridays. Black Gay pensioners are just sod out of luck. Yeah, I know you're joking though... At least I seriously hope so... The only grocery store near where I work is always full of really old people on my lunch break. I just want to nip in and nip out, not get stuck in a long line of people trying to pay with cash or cheques... I tend to be a fast walker and even young healthy Americans move slowly and get in my way.
So another horrendous massacre of children in the States, and already the right is calling for more guns and accusing the left of using the killings to further a political agenda. What a sick place. Poor kids.
Right to bear arms but not to protect kids.If ever there was a need to ' cancel' a group of people, it's the NRA. Remember watching 'Bowling for Columbine' by Mike Moore and for opening a new bank account you were taken into a room to select a free gun or semi automatic, absolutely bonkers.
Just mental isn’t it. How sick in the head do you have to be to see something like this happen on a nearly monthly basis, only in your country and not think that gun control is the problem. kids routinely practise gun drills ffs, so everyone knows it’s a problem yet for some unknown realise continue to deny it. Wonder if it was their kids whether some of these politicians would think differently.
Think the argument is the good guys carry them and do nothing wrong but the bad guys would still carry them if they were made illegal. **** argument imo. Ban them, make it harder to get them and stop teaching kids how to use them! Also, improve security in schools ffs. You can't get in a school or get access to your own child over here!
I personally find the whole NRA argument idiotic. why? i've been a hell of a lot of places in the USA. I have personally not come across people openly or concealing weapons as "good guys" wandering about the place. If you've a high calibre rifle and magazines you can burst into just about anywhere. no security will stop you really. A hand gun in a fight with a rifle is no contest. its an utter fallacy to say the good guys can shoot the bad guys. its lunacy. Yankland is utterly divided but they can all agree that money talks. they might as well partition the place into 3 states. The west coasters. the rusty east and the nutcases in the middle and south and get on with it.
There's an element of truth in this, but the problem has developed over a long period precisely because of this attitude. Of course, to eradicate the problem would take a long time and a careful strategy to try and avoid the situation you describe, but unless they start somewhere they'll never get there and the situation can only get worse until the entire country is back to the wild west days. There is a deeper cultural problem though as well. Other countries with fairly lax gun control still have nowhere near the number of incidents that the US has. Their per capita rate is off the scale and many of their politicians acknowledge this and try to address it, but as soon as they do the right wing propaganda machine is wheeled out. Like I said in my first post, the right accuses the left of cynically making political capital on it, but this is a moral problem that every sane person in the country has an obligation to address, regardless of political persuasion.
So, the US and the UK. Two nations that have at various times been looked up to as leaders of the world. One is now a horror show, and the other a bloody farce. No wonder I'm a grumpy old get.
I wasn't arguing the defence if guns mate, just sharing a viewpoint I've read about. I agree they should be abolished and positive action/results will take time. If it were up to me, guns, bombs, etc. would be abolished world wide. Let's go back to wars with swords
I didn't think you were - sorry if it came across that way. You highlighted a point that a lot of people try to make, and I was just discussing it.
I don't think there's a right wing propaganda machine being wheeled out, there has always been a very clear divide between Republicans and Democrats on the issue. Democrats, politicians and members of the public who identify as Democrats, are strongly and have historically been in favour of gun control while Republicans are very much in favour of keeping the current gun laws in place citing the Constitution as the reason for their right to bear arms. They are a long way off bipartisan agreement on anything to do with gun control.
