Calling 'homophobia' every five minutes doesn't help either. Those saying it have already decided that there's an argument to be had and they're placing themselves firmly on one side of it. If you take the view that a player should be free to quietly take himself out of a situation he doesn't agree with and accept his right to do that, we'd get a lot further because this issue is never going to be resolved with everyone being happy. There are two ways (or more) of looking at lots of things. It's quite arrogant to think yours is the right way and everyone else is wrong. (Not aimed at you personally, obviously on this issue or any other just a general observation).
For once I'm actually looking forward to the Europa league final, because its between two teams that fully appreciate it rather than a CL dropout.

Most people don’t care. However most of us here are straight males (I’m guessing) over 30 years old. For 15 year olds kids who are gay sitting there potentially thinking I can’t be a footballer because there aren’t any gay ones out there. Or thinking I have to hide who I am as a person etc. In an ideal world, it wouldn’t be an issue and wouldn’t need to say anything. But can you imagine the headlines and press and the shock and attention would get if press saw a footballer out with another guy etc. people want to take ownership of their own lives and at the moment until we get to a stage where a famous persons sexuality isn’t news worthy, the person will always have to announce it themselves to take that ownership before the press can make their money ‘outing’ them.
I think these things should be a matter of personal choice. Yes, people will draw conclusions from those choices because that's what we always do.
I understand that. But almost no one really cares who is gay or straight anymore. I understand their fear and trepidation of the unknown, there's no way to unscramble an egg, but no one really cares if they're gay or not... It's all in their heads.
I have a 14, almost 15 year old and he genuinely couldn't give a **** what sexuality someone is. Guess those morals could have come from me though
Welllllll. The thing is it's a case of needing to hear the perspective and respect the sentiment expressed. I cannot say I understand the issues faced as "coming out" and the angst about it are not something I had to face but I can listen and respect the topic. I can also however form an impression that the "leader" could well corner a very very lucrative market here. I see a lot of TV and positive messaging here and someone could make their career just by bringing open. We have many much loved people such as the great Tom Daley who everyone cheers for gold or schofield etc. It is a tad cynical but I just think there will be a mass movement on this shortly.
Not sure if same in the UK, but in the US, it's almost not cool to be straight. Almost every teen girl I know identifies as bi.... But only dates boys. Simply "Straight" these days is very uncool amongst teens.
Dont think that’s true. I think it’s very easily as a straight white male to assume things like this are being made a big deal when it shouldn’t, but most of us don’t know what gay people have to go through etc. if you’ve seen people making homophobic jokes, often gay chants at Brighton games etc, can’t blame people for being sceptical about coming out to that.
I feel sorry for teenagers these days, the world must seem so confusing to them. I feel for parents of teens as well having to navigate them through the current trends and ideas without really understanding it themselves. Everyone should be able to be who they want to be without feeling odd or different.

I agree with most of that, and certainly agree that people should be prepared to consider and accept other points of view.
Well and Britain might be in a different place than here. I have three teenagers and they all have friends who are very open about their sexuality, etc... Although the funny thing is my daughters all have so many bi friends, but not one of them is dating a girl... They're all dating boys so I think the "bi" thing is just social pressure not to be straight. Even my son, his best friend is bi. He doesn't care what his friend is. My generation as a teen probably would have been grossed out by a male friend being bi "what if he ****s thinking about me?"
Making an announcement is 'not normal, therefore it is suggesting they are different by making that announcement. Just get on with your life.
