Hah! I'm still around. Spent last year getting the inside of our new place sorted, and this year it was all about the garden. Needed a huge new 60m2 patio, so I got quotes, and agreed with someone to do it.

Sadly, they were a little unresponsive as April arrived, and we really wanted it done well before summer because it was holding up plans for other areas in the garden, so decided **** it, I'll do it myself! I mean, how hard could it be? I've watched youtube videos, and got a lot of tips and guidance from a Facebook group for landscapers, so already feel like an expert.

    Good things:
    • I now own my own cement mixer
    • We got a huge, 4x3 wooden gazebo with solid roof that looks ****ing ace
    • I got another bloke in to dig out the foundations, and he let me help him by driving the dumper truck! (BEST.DAY.EVER.)
    • The missus loves the new patio.
    • Its satisfying to know I did it, and saved about 4k.
    • I didn't twat myself with a hammer or mallet, no slabs were broken, I didn't cut myself with a stanley knife, I didn't fall off the roof of the gazebo when putting the tiles on nor did I fall off the ladder, I only nearly drilled myself in the heart once too. All in all, that was pretty good for me!

    Bad things:
    • It turns out if you're head of Cyber Security and sit on your arse all day, landscaping uses a completely different set of muscles. Who knew?
    • 600x900 sandstone slabs are ****ing heavy (shout out to Melton Stone, great quality and delivery!)
    • The gazebo took 4 days, on my own, to put up. The tiles for the roof look ace but were a ballache to put on.

So yeah, 60m2 of patio is down, gazebo is up, need to prepare about 30m2 in front of the patio for turf, and need to lay around 100 smaller slabs we reclaimed from the old patio along the back of the house. But it's getting there, although obviously it's taking up most of my free time.

On the bright side, I've lost over a stone in the past 6 weeks, and have a tan that looks like I spent 2 weeks in Mexico.

I queued at the national archieve to see the rifle Oswald, allegedly, used to shoot JFK, it wasn't on display. Gutted.
Though I did see something about the Kingston Upon Hull MP who was one of the key movers and shakers in the setting up of the USA. Surprised.

I have 50m2 of patio to do in the next few weeks. I'm just turning the current ones (450 x450 sandstone) over and regrouting though. The cost of pavers alone to replace is stupid.

My daughter and her husband just built this themselves, half roof/half open, full kitchen in the roof part, rather impressed considering hubby couldn’t put up a shelf two years ago..
