Sorry Kyle; I did not mean to make fun of what you said. I have made a good living as a driver and I can assure you that I take these things very seriously. But I thought your comment was funny because you said you were not superstitious! Let us hope that you're superstition is wrong on this occasion, and that the rest of the 2011 racing season goes without the number 3 you are concerned about.
Marco's death is so very sad. Being a bike rider myself and seeing the accident one thing concerns me, and that is his helmet everyone who has ever ridden a bike knows how important it is to have a correctly fitting helmet. Seeing Marco's helmet come off like that makes me think it was to big, possibly to compensate for the amount of hair he had, and could be a contributing factor in his death. I hope this is not the case because if it is somebody has got some explaining to do.
I understand your concern Mephisto - that his helmet may have been slightly larger than normal but every racer chooses a helmet according to personal preference; and I do not personally believe that to have been the case anyway. I have my own feelings about why his helmet came off but I have no wish to explain them at the moment and certainly not in this thread.
I've upt up a tribute message to Marco Simoncelli. If you wish to do the same go to http://www.motogp.com/en/news/2011/post+and+read+tributes+to+marco+simoncelli If you wish to read mine, it is under the name 'JC' I've never actually seen this kind of thing happen to someone live... and I never want to again.
RIP Marco, such a tragic waste of this young man, am so glad I missed the race on Sunday, not that old to remember too many fatalities in motorsport apart from Sennas which was the most horrible sporting event that I've watched live
Yes, I tend to agree with the hair aspect not helping with helmet retention, my wife has a lot more hair than me and her helmet always seems a tad looser than mine, although I concur with Cosi in believing even a perfect fitting tightly fitted helmet would not have remained in position given the circumstances. This was a truly awful accident and one which will have a massive impact on motorcycle racing, it will affect Rossi greatly and will change the course of motorcyle racing history, Marco was a true character and thing's will never be the same again. Valentino could well retire upon reflection of this sad event.
The news at the moment is that Rossi is not going to retire and I hope he does not, he should go out next year take the crown and dedicate it to his friend.
Meph: I very much fear the Valentino Rossi dominance days of bike racing are effectively over and have been for some month's now, although I would absolutely support Mr Rossi in one further attempt at taking the title, but alas I think, sadly, it's going to be a bridge too far, even for the great man himself.
I'm not sure about that Rossi and Burgess are using this year to get that Ducati right for next season and I wouldn't bet against them doing it. Don't write the great man off yet.
Meph: Let's hope you are right and I am wrong, Rossi is the comsumate bike rider and has transformed his skill into an art form, absolutely unique.
I think for next year's Misano race they should have a trophy of Simoncelli for the podium finishers.
I also hope Rossi continues and I certainly would not write him off for next season. The only reason he has struggled this season is because he has an inferior machine to the other top riders. I am sure Ducati will get their act together and we will once again see Rossi winning races.
Yeah thought that was really nice as well. Webber has some stickers on his helmet for Dan, and the McLaren duo are wearing black armbands and I'm sure there's others. Heard Ferrari were trying to decide what they should do as a tribute to Marco, but haven't seen anything yet.
