I agree. We're talking about £12m+ for the joint 16th top scorer in the league or something like that. That's insane money, and at least buys 6 Allahyar's. I hope today really cements the idea that to progress we need a significant overhaul. We've done fantastic this year to survive but this squad is extremely lacking. It's a crucial summer ahead
Well Fulham spent £20m plus on transfers and then whatever wages the likes of Gazzaniga and Harry Wilson would want (not forgetting the players they have at the club from their PL season, I'm sure Mitrovic and Seri won't be on peanuts). I'm including wages in that figure, because if we're serious about signing Championship quality players, we are going to have to up our wage bill quite significantly, including the players that are already here.
We don’t know what Acun’s budget will be. You can’t base it on only his wealth as he must definitely have much richer backers.
I agree, I think it's wonderful we have home grown talent that are making such a difference at the club, but the money being offered is mental, there's talk of the transfer fee reaching £20m for KLP from the likes of West Ham and Brentford. Greaves will easily go for at least eight figures, which again for a player who has had one season in each division is pretty remarkable (and testament to our academy). The fact that they are Hull born lads shouldn't disguise the fact that with the money we'd get for them, we could easily replace them.
Completely agree, it's fantastic. But we have to sell to progress and that's the unfortunate thing. It's similar to what Stoke did last year. They sold Collins to Burnley for £12m and bought Wilmot from Watford for about £2m. Stoke strengthened and made about £10m in the process
That’s Fulham, who came down with a strong squad and parachute payments. How much did Huddersfield and Luton spend? Shota and Acun have both gone on the record to say it’s imperative we keep KLP as part of building a squad capable of competing next season. We could take the money and run but neither the owner nor manager thinks that’s the best option.
We have no idea what they think is right. They're certainly not going to come out in the media and say they're happy to sell. We want the strongest negotiating position possible.
We need to be smart in summer not silly. A new back bone is needed to progress at this level. Today has shown how limited some of them are when they aren’t protected by 2 holding midfielders. Thankfully Shota was pragmatic and recognised that and we’ve stayed up comfortably but ultimately at the top end you can’t rely on poor finishing of the opposition to get you by in games which we have a lot this season.
Well this is just it, I was told there were a few people in the background chucking money in, but I'm not sure now that that's the case. The money has to come from somewhere and Acun isn't stupid, he's not kidding when he says he wants us to be challenging, so outside of selling our best players where else are we generating promotion winning cash from? I know LD is a big fan of the Brentford model, if we were following that, we'd be selling KLP and Greaves high and then reinvesting that money in the squad. Brentford didn't happen overnight, it took a few seasons for them to build up their squad to be able to challenge and did so by selling the likes of Benrahma, Watkins, Konsa, Mepham and Maupay. In fact, the first two were sold in their promotion season. They key to Brentford's success, outside of their incredible scouting philosophies, was that their owner also sits on the board at FC Midtjylland and they borrowed/bought players from that league and from that club. I think we might see a similar philosophy with Acun doing the same in Turkey, which is a much stronger division in my opinion. We'd all love to see homegrown talent playing for us in the Premier League, but I think in order to get there we might need to make a few decisions that'll probably piss off a fair few people.
The away support also, I bet they’re bothered & naffed off, having spent hard earned brass to travel all that way to see minimal effort & a pasting. It’s them I feel for. Ah well it’s only a game, at least Martin didn’t get a hat trick, that would have been the ultimate insult! Onwards and upwards to next week...... Safe journey home to the travelling support.
Yes but you could say the same about Barnsley and look what happened this season. I'd be very surprised if Luton were challenging at that end next season (assuming they don't go up) and I think their squad will be picked apart and they'll end up in obscurity. I get that spending money doesn't guarantee you success, but you need to spend some in order to go up and considerably more than we have been doing if we want to be competitive.
If you think that, why would you take the money for two of our best players? I think there’s a bigger risk in losing KLP and Greaves than reward, but that’s just my opinion.
Guess it depends on what our recruitment strategy is. Are we looking for ready made replacements to come straight in or are we looking at potential.
