Reguilon out with (another!) injury, meaning Sessegnon will almost certainly start again…

I’m gonna apologise to everyone as I’ve RCL’d us all badly, about 18 months ago I said how LB/ LWB was probably our strongest position as we had signed the impressive Reguilon, Sess was doing well in Germany and gave the impression he’d come back and smash it after a below par first season, Davies was always dependable and we also had Cirkin in the youth ranks as one we had decent hopes for.

    Fast forward to now:
Reguilon’s had a season of injuries and struggled at times with form, could also lose him in the summer.
    Sessegnon’s been pure ****.
Davies is far better at LCB than he is at LB.
    Cirkin was sold to Sunderland.

    I’m sorry… just… sorry.

Just go for it. Put Lucas in at RWB. He's actually got a tackle on him, and could be a sort of underlapping wing back like Doherty. That might bring the best out of Deki who doesn't look like the same player when Doherty isn't there.

I’ve been looking forward to this game all week. Not quite so enthusiastic for it now I see that Jonathan fatty useless Moss is the referee.

The way out at this point is probably to play a 433:

    Emerson Romero Dier Davies
    Hojbjerg Bentancur Kulu
    Bergwijn Kane Son

    But this will never happen.

I wouldn't be all that fussed if Reguilon left tbh. Constant niggling injuries this season and his overall form is above average at best. At 25 years of age is he going to improve all that much that if Real put in a generous bid for him we'd say no?

I think Reguilon is a player that’s quite under appreciated by many of our fans, admittedly his injuries have hindered his form this season but in general I think he’s a good player. I get Trippier vibes with regards to how some fans view him, I’m not sure who fans compare him too to get the idea he’s as bad/ average as what they may say. There’s a couple of truly standout LBs in Robertson and Cancelo but beyond that there isn’t many to then be envious of. When we lost Trippier people then realised just how big of a drop in quality there could be with Aurier and Doherty. I wouldn’t be so quick to accept an offer for him to be honest unless Real trigger the option where we have no choice.

Would much rather sell Sessegnon and bring another in to compete with Reguilon. Sessegnon is going nowhere with us and is even more injury prone.

And Cancelo's not even a natural left-back, he's just used there in a playmaker role by Guardiola.
Robertson should be sent off constantly too and he would be if he played for us.
    Good player. Total ****house.

There are some good left-backs out there, but a lot of them seem to have injury problems.
Alphonso Davies, Chilwell and Tierney spring to mind. Cucurella's been very good for Brighton, too.
Grimaldo would probably suit Conte's style of football and he's only got a year left on his contract.
Probably going back to Barca, though.

Chilwell I’m 50-50 on. Sometimes he looks really good, sometimes not.

Davies looks great but we’d never be able to sign him, likewise Tierney (and Chilwell). Cucurella does look decent but better than Reguilon? I’m not sure.

Grimaldo would be a good shout.

Kostic’s name keeps cropping up in recent weeks too and many fans are convinced he’s the answer but 6 months ago I’m pretty sure most would’ve had to Google the guy. Does look good don’t get me wrong but at 29 I do wonder why he’s not been on the radar of bigger clubs before, though that said I did say yesterday I liked how Frankfurt played so maybe it was a case of him needing the right club. You’d think under someone like Conte he’d do well too.

Just to clarify, I wasn't suggesting that we'd be able to sign any of those three.
I was just pointing out good left-backs who have all got injury issues.
They've each missed about half the season and have had problems before that, too.

Yeah I knew you weren’t, I just pointed it out as I think it shows that most of the players we’d consider better than Reguilon are at clubs we wouldn’t be able to sign them from.

That’s why I don’t think he’s as bad as what some of our fans perceive him to be. He’s not perfect by any means and his form of late isn’t great (likely due to injuries) but I really don’t see too many options that’d be a significant improvement, most of the ones we’re linked with/ who fans would like are more of a punt than anything else.

Regulion’s buyback clause is waaaay above his market value. I’d be quite happy to let him go for that figure if I thought there was an obvious choice. I do quite like Cucurella at Brighton but I’m sure there are better options. Conte seems to prefer Sess but I also worry about his injury record and his mentality a bit too. Seems a bit afraid to use his body at times, he’s had performances where he has though and looked good. But need to see it more.

I don’t think there’s been many games where Sess has looked good to be honest. It’s a very, very select few, borderline Winks ratio levels. And it’s a shame because I really like the lad and was excited at his signing but he’s easily one of the worst LBs/ LWBs in the league based on performances.

If I were confident that there were significantly solid and better options out there that we could comfortably let Reguilon go for then I’d do it, as I would just about any player but I really do struggle seeing us buying a guaranteed better player than him at the moment. The ones that are, are generally at bigger clubs/ rivals. Getting £40m+ for him is all well and good but if we spend say all of that on a potential downgrade like how Aurier and then Doherty were to Trippier we’ll be worse off and probably out of pocket for it too.

Yeah Sess’s good games have been rare, that’s why I think it’s a mentality thing. He doesn’t seem to trust his own body and therefore isn’t willing to physically front up. I think we’ll probably end up keeping both as Conte likes Sess and I doubt Madrid will buy Regulion unless they have another club willing to pay more than the buyback so they can flip him, but I doubt anyone will be lining up to do it.

Either of them managing to have a run of 10/15 starts without injuries would help matters greatly IMO. I think one of them just needs to go on a run and build some confidence and consistency.
