Love the old horror movies: Hammer and similar (Amicus, Tigon) plus there were some great American horror films in the 1970s/ early 1980s. That was probably the golden era with Exorcist, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Masacre, Amityville Horror, American Werewolf in London, The Omen, etc. As far as making me jump, I watched The Ring at the cinema and I nearly jumped out of my seat a few times but then it was that type of film: here's a nice tranquil scene...are you relaxed...HERE'S A SCARY THING JUMPING OUT AT YOU. One relatively unkown Hammer film I would truly recommend for its twists and downright creepiness is Scream of Fear AKA Taste of Fear. A few more you should watch: Village of the Damned Blood on Satan's Claw Witchfinder General Wicker Man Also worth a mention are the many mostly Hammer short story collections. A personal favourite is Tales that Witness Madness which includes a story about a man who dumps Joan Collins for a log.
I used to stay up late and watch the old horror movies - I thought they were great! Boris Karloff and Bela Lagosi were pretty awesome back in the day. The were not actually scary though - it wasn't until the 'stalk & slash' genre of the late 70's/early 80's bred films like the original 'Halloween' and 'Friday the 13th' that I actually hid behind cushions! Although the sight of Christopher Lee as Dracula had me ****ting myself! please log in to view this image
The finest horror movie of all time came out around the same time as the Exorcist but did not really get any attention because of this. It was called "Black Christmas". Check it out you will not be disappointed.
