It's a brilliant film. British 'grit' at its best. Meadows is superb, give the rest of them a watch. <cheers>

I think The Birdcage is good. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane as the 2 gay men and Gene Hackman as the bigoted right wing father of the bride to be had some funny scenes at times

Going to say I’m extremely embarrassed by this comment, but I’ve only just watched Shawshank Redemption! And it has to be on this list

I'd love to be able to watch it for the first time, great film. One of the most satisfying endings you'll see and a hell of a journey getting there.

Great film, one I can watch over and over.
It was based on a short story (novella) by Stephen King, called Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.
I'm sure The Green Mile was based on a King short story as well, but both films run well over two and a half hours hours.
    Both brilliant.

On the subject of great films, Rocky is just about to knock Apollo Creeds block off on ITV4 right now.

I was thinking about the King story when I posted before, I remember reading it years ago and from memory it's one of the best/most faithful book to film adaptations I've seen.

It can be brilliant when a visionary director takes a great book and puts their own spin on it, Shawshank isn't that and it's better for it.

I'm sure I've got it somewhere, will have to rake it out and have another read of it.
A lot of Kings books translate to film very well. Could be his writing style sets the scene, characters etc enough, that it doesn't need much embellishment.
