Some of the poor ****ers houses, no electricity or water government have started a 10 yr build plan to get them into new build apartments, still 7 yrs to go though.
That church tower has two bells from medieval times, 1350 or thereabouts. Oldest ringing bells in the UK apparently. Interesting, huh? Good beer too.
It was grim as ****, then we drove past some school kids, heading home there, big beaming smiles, uniform was immaculate
I've seen plenty of places like that in Morocco, especially down south out in the sticks. People living in what are essentially shanty towns. And similarly, kids going to and from school from these places. I'm not saying that type of housing is ideal or acceptable. But we in the West have come to expect absolute luxury compared to how some people live. Whilst a huge proportion of the world's population just get on with it. One of the places I used to stay in Morocco (and granted I was just on holiday, so had money and access to food and transport etc) was little more than a room carved out of the sandstone cliff, with some breeze blocks to reinforce the walls and make a roof. No electricity or running water. We had a well, and you had 3 buckets of fresh water per day, which was for drinking, cleaning your teeth, cooking and washing. Living like this for a month really makes you appreciate the basic things in life.
I've done that mate, about 7 yrs ago. In a village near the lower atlas. Mrs and I did the usual couple of nights in Marrakech but then drove miles out in the sticks. The village was set in a beautiful location, but all houses were set on a hill, all higgledy piggledy with simple ppl who were just getting on with their simple lives. We stayed with a family who rented out a room in their home and it was very much as you describe. The views in the morning, with the mountains and clouds rolling past were incredible.
It’s an incredible country, especially in the Atlas Mountains. Remember driving through a town there that was red. All of the houses made from the red clay, red roads, red dogs wandering around. Everybody from the knees down covered in red clay and dust. I used to go for a month at a time for around a 6-7 year period back in the early noughties, mainly down south in the desert south of Agadir, where there are some amazing right hand point break surf spots.
