In recent years Celtic fans have become embroiled in in-house controversy regarding Public Displays of Poppies and observation of a minute's silence.
May I suggest that the Celtic club create a simple shrine consisting of a wreath and an appropriate receptacle outside all of the stands at Celtic Park where fans who wish can respectfully leave their Poppy. These shrine can then be carried to a Cenotaph or other appropriate place. This would give the Poppy the respect it deserves.
Everyone who wants a minutes silence should stand, or sit with head bowed for one minute before the game. Again this would give total respect to the fallen soldiers. Far better than recent years when people were forced to remain silent when they did not want to. Their were reports of a Celtic fan coughing and hence disrespecting the occasion. To be honest I think it is disrespecting the dead soldiers to have people uncomfortable with respecting the occasion under duress.

Just observe the minute's silence. It isn't hard. It commemorates the deaths of soldiers in the Great War, many of who were Irish, many of whom were Catholic.

It's just ******s who want to disrupt the minute's silence. ******s with a romanticised view of Irish politics and freedom fighters and Celtic football club.

    **** 'em.

The minute silence is probably the most apolitical event of the year.

It reminds us what politics, religion and general bawbaggery can cause.

It is only the ****wits without two brain cells to rub together that create an issue over it. Those ****wits amongst the Celtic support have no idea how much of an embarrassment they are to the club and the rest of the fans.

Stereo Typist and Cossy obviously neither of you have any problem with wearing the Poppy or holding a minutes silence, and that is fine. Both of you are entitled to remember the soldiers who gave up their lives for the Country.

It is completely right that you show respect to those you respect. However, just as both of you should have the right to commemorate with a minute's silence and displaying the poppy others must be giving the right to desist. I outlined a method so that neither side could take offence.
I would hate that if people were giving tribute to someone belonging to my family I would hate that some were doing it under duress. Surely giving homage has to be voluntary.

You would have to have something seriously wrong with you if being quiet for one or two minutes to respect the fallen is considered being "under duress."

Hoops the whole thing is personal. I'd never force anyone to take part in the minutes silence.

But do they need to show such disrespect for those who do? Do they need to make noise in that minute? No, they don't. But they choose to and that is what marks them out as ****wits.

Google Willie Angus VC. Willie survived thankfully but if the ****wits at our club can't respect him or his less fortunate comrades then they have no place at our club.

Cossy - While I totally respect your opinion, I do not agree that 'the minute silence is probably the most apolitical event of the year'. I would suggest that this, establishment organised, event has actually very little to do with commemoration of the 'fallen' of the two great wars (although I do not doubt, for one minute, the sincerity of the general populace who honour it) but in reality, has more to do with the propagation of a jingoistic culture which is designed to promote the continuation of the very same fervour which sent those unfortunate souls to their doom. Contentious as my post may be, I also do not believe it is one formulated by someone "without two braincells".

    Exactly.

Perhaps the Hun who started this thread isn't as stupid as he appears. Starting an argument about something that isn't even going to happen......very clever.

Leave your politics at the door:emoticon-0112-wonde.......oh, except for our politics.

Of course the issue has already been fudged on here.

I should credit those who oppose the introduction of their politics into Celtic park to at least courteously attempt to understand the opposite position....but they haven't.

    Well done Superhun<ok>

The Celtic fans who have lost some of their family members and friends need to have away to commemorate their love ones.
However is it fair that by doing so at Celtic Park that they are reminding thousands of Celtic fans of the murder and hardship that
British toops opposed on friennds and relatives of very many people amongst the Celtic fans.

Wasn't the major issue pre remembrance match.

Poppygate happend about a week before the actual game where the poppy was to be worn.

Celtic wore the away top that day so technically the protesters got what they asked for

The actual disturbance on the day wasn't as bad as expected.

It depends on what you expected. If Celtic had the back-bone that Kelly displayed when Hibs objected to the flying of the tricolour
and told the authorities, no ceremonies involving Celtic, we would be more respected.

Remember when the Hibs tried to ban our flying of the tricolour it was Rangers who backed us.
