    Hawking pose <laugh>
My dog in Spain wanted to sit on people's heads. If you were crashed out on the sofa, he'd sit on your head, if you were by the pool sunbathing, he'd sit on your head, if you were sitting on the sofa watching a movie, he'd climb up the back and sit on your head. Big ****er he was too.

Yeah, ran a marathon there once .... <whistle>

Honestly though, you'll love it. Great city with a laid back, quirky vibe. There's loads to do there, including all the classic must do's like riding the trams, going down to Fisherman's wharf, Alcatraz, Golden Gate bridge etc.

Would defo recommend getting out of the City though and into Marin County to see some great country and Redwoods etc.

Also, you're not far from Yosemite National Park up that way, which is truly a life changing experience.

    Yup.

As Piskie has listed - if you want to go over to Alcatraz, keep in mind the excursions might be full for the day, even in October, so you might not just be able to rock up to Fisherman's Wharf and expect to get on a boat.

I was touring around California when I went, so was probably only there for a few days. I drove onto places such as Disney in Anaheim, Los Angeles the first one built I believe. Before eventually going down to San Diego, went to the Zoo there, 6th biggest in the world. Before cutting across to Las Vegas.

That's a hell of a lot of driving mind (one way) and internal flight on way back.

Keeping it simple, scenic areas about 120 mile South of San Fransico (2 hour drive) you have Monterey Bay, coastal town and aquarium, very close to Carmel, where Clint Eastwood was famously Mayor.

So first part of your post I'm avoiding, no interest. I'll see the bridge from various places and parks and couldn't care less about Fisherman's Ward or Alcatraz.

Muir Park is the closest to go see redwoods so that's a plan.

Grace Cathedral area looks nice. Need to find a place to try the Napa wines but not a big tour.

After we had been to the various Golden Gate viewing parks we drove to Sausalito, on far side of bridge. Cool little town with loads of eateries and coffee shops. Alcatraz is actually well worth a visit.

I can't stand places that are rammed full of tourists, after NYC with the family I had refused to go to SF but I've said I'll come but will not be going with them to the tourist spots, my youngest has already said he's coming with me as he also Hates that kind of holiday.

Most places that I'll go will be walking distance or short trips on trams whatever else they have.

Why not let Judith Chalmers take the strain and just watch on TV.

Works for plenty on here when it comes to their favourite football team <whistle>

I get stick for it from the family "don't you want to see the Brooklyn bridge?" No it's just a bridge. Stuff like that. I just like to go somewhere and wander and find stuff. I'll go to the tourist places that interest me but I'm not bombing around to see everything like we did in NYC it's was ****.

How long are you there for ?

Northern California is beautiful and there’s loads to do up there.

I know it’s not in San Francisco, but my No1 pick would be to go to Yosemite
