Yes, it was great to hear Acun's plans but that worried me a bit. I think Shota is a bit more circumspect, gives the impression everything is up for grabs contract wise. Until we are mathematically safe, I think its sensible to keep quiet about the level of change to the squad that might happen in the summer although recognise it got people excited.
You don't remember the bit where he said we'd be adding to the core we have to push them to being better players then?
Of the players out of contract I think Honeyman and Ingram are definite. Smallwood put in a shift again today and for all his detractors ran himself ragged and deserves an extension. Rest maybe will not be here next season
Ingram, Smallwood, Honeyman have to be priorities, as well as improved deals for some of the younger ones. Let's see what they can do with a bit of investment behind them.
Slater is definitely the long term replacement there, Smallwood put a hell of a performance in and Slater is only going to get better. Will be looking back on that 50k and thinking what a signing at the end of next season. Also he put a hell of a performance in against the manager who gave him his debut today.
Never thought he’d turn out this good when he first played for us last season. Wilder isn’t his biggest fan though, not for footballing reasons though from what I’ve heard which may be why he never got a proper chance there
I sort of agree...but progress would see him move to the bench or be squad player. We can't (and shouldn't) replace 20+ players in window. It's a process, and I would expect the majority of the starting 11 to be here next season in some capacity.
This is where getting the balance right is really tough. I don't think Smallwood will feature much next season, but I'd still want him around the place. In his 2 years with us, he's been outstanding and played a huge part in turning the club around. But I also think he deserves the opportunity to decide his own future, much like Magennis did. Richie's stock will be high, rightly so and his next deal will probably be his last big one in football. He won't be on much with us so is it right to stand in his way where he can go elsewhere and probably get a 3 year deal on more money I think the same applies to a few of those out of contract, apart from Ingram & Honeyman. They both need to be offered fresh terms
I must say after his time at Blackburn and the comments coming from their side when we signed him, he has proved his doubters wrong, I was one of them at the time. He has done a sterling job for us and has been the cement that on the whole has kept our heads above water this season. Out of all the players out of contract, I agree Smallwood, Ingram and Honeyman should be given a new contract.
