Thing is, really top,top players aren't likely to sign for Eddie Howe. He has no pedigree, no experience of life at the top, european level. Which top level international players would want to be part of the 'Geordie experiment' ?

unfortunately, this is the way most rational people will look at it...footballers are neither rational or loyal these days and money, whether it be dirty blood money or not, is all that drives them, should the saudis throw enough money (and probably un-mentioned freebies) at players then they are likely to sign.

on the other hand footballers could also use this as a platform to show just how much they truly believe in equality in the world...let's see how many hypocrites there are eh?

It’s actually 25 years old that banner, made in Monaco in 1997 for a bit of a cheap laugh at the locals.

Whether or not the mags can end up competing with the nouveau riche clubs like Chelsea and City and with the older, established, clubs like Liverpool and United is utterly irrelevant to me.

What makes me sad is that it is likely that money from a regime as disgusting as the Saudi regime has taken away our century-old rivalry with them. How can we compete with the cash that the Saudi government (it is them) can throw their way? We can't, and consequently the rivalry has, in truth, simply ceased to exist.

I remember a newspaper report from a defeat that we had at Chelsea about 20 to 25 years ago. The first sentence said that the club whose team cost £200M (Chelsea, obviously) beat the team that cost £20M (us, also obviously). Nothing more really needed to be said. That is where we're at now. The mags can spend silly money while we are hopefully pushing for promotion from League 1. There's just no comparison.

I always said that what goes around comes around. The mags are above us in the same way that the six-in-a-row and their two relegations put us above them 3 or 4 years ago. How do we get that back? Beats me.

The rivalry was one of the hottest in English football, and whilst it never meant as much as it should, both teams being "big" whilst also being massive underachievers, it seems that even that has been taken away from the NE by a bunch of stone age fundamentalists with more money than sense.

**** the Saudis and **** the mags. Sunderland is our team, come what may, and if travelling around the country to League 1 grounds is where we're at, l shall be doing that for as long as it lasts. Maybe that's the point? Sunderland is what is important to us and if the deluded idiots in NE1 think that a pile of Saudi cash makes them better than us, good luck to them.

I think you are right, if you don't spend you are in a 24 club lottery, if you do spend (wisely and/or big) you give yourself an advantage in that lottery. It's like buying ten tickets to everyone else's one.

So it begins. Reality sets in for the great unwashed when they realise the Burn/Trippier/Bruno recruitment was the best it's going to get and Haaland isn't signing after all

No new stadium, no new training ground, no circumventing FFP rules ...

... next season will be the familiar relegation battle and out of the cups early.

As much as I claim to not care about the mags unless we are playing them, I am surrounded by them as I have been for the majority of my life. The number of them who have crawled out of the woodwork since the Arab takeover sickens me. i hope you are right

To be honest, there's a big chunk of my thoughts that the Mags are just a side part of this deal, and that it's really about the Saudis and the Ruben's getting hold of and developing land as long term assets. I'd not rule out a new ground yet, but again not one that the Mags would own. Long term owning a sports stadium with a largeish regular rent incoming is going to be profitable, along with developing any other land they can around the landfill for flats, offices and so on. As the Ruben's are the ones developing the new HMRC offices to be built on Pilgrim Street, its a nice little pointer I think.

But, if the Saudis DON'T pump hundreds of millions into the Mags for glamour signings and there's no quick change in their performances, you can bet the Mags will turn on them. Staveley isn't that wealthy and is probably only one bad media statement away from turning them against her (just like Methven did with us). Her crying recently about how unfair the sanctions imposed on Abramovich and Chelsea probably shows how worried she is that stuff could happen that limits what the Saudis can do (say limits on state ownership of sports clubs being brought in) and her being screwed having to pick up the pieces.

As much as I’d love to see them go down, I just can’t see how they’ll struggle next season. Trippier and Bruno have been huge upgrades, a couple more of that standard signing in the summer and they’ll be pushing mid table. It’s a poor league below the top teams.

I don't think they'll go down but it'll be another trudge imo.

They're playing poorly and the whole squad needs sorting.

And, as Everton have shown, spending money doesn't get you in the top half.
