How many of you collected football cards when you were a youngster? (or maybe even cigarette cards if you are an 'older viewer'?) My first was in the 1976-77 season. The book to stick the cards in was 20p and the packs of cards cost 4p for seven cards. But the cards weren't sticky so you had to buy some glue to stick them in! The following year the book was a special 'jubilee price' of 10p. The cards had gone up to 5p for six cards though, but they were 'sticky' on the back in the same way a postage stamp is. Just imagine the germs that must have been passed around schools doing 'swapsies'! I remember that the books had the previous seasons' league tables inside the back cover and happened to coincide with the seasons that Workington and Southport lost their bids for re-election; the last two sides to do so. Funnily enough I still look for their results at the week-end, even to this day. I stopped buying them a couple of years later when the packs worked out more than a penny per card. One only had so much pocket money in those days! So what are your memories of Football Cards? When did you first collect them and how much did they cost?
Had a few football cards but never really collected them officially. Got a box in the loft full of old cigerette cards featuring anything from cars, planes and tanks through to flowers, birds and of course footballers! Interestingly, I found this website a few months ago which has a fantastic selection of old football cards to buy - there's some real gems in there: http://www.footballcardsuk.com/
I'm surprized you bothered devonFRATTONiser as Pompey were hardly ever in them except the odd team sticker. lol
I just found an image of the 1976-77 album! please log in to view this image and 1977-78 please log in to view this image
I still have my Merlin '92, '93 and '94 Premier League sticker books at home - all completed. I remember going to Bitterne Leisure centre in the summer holidays to go to the mass swap meet! I think I have held on to them hoping they might be worth something in a few years.....on eBay they currently go for 99p!
Must be as old as you Dev, still think I can name some of the players. Ray Clemmence, Emlyn Hughes not sure who the forward is, Man City? Charlie George, Colin Todd, looks like a young Nigel Clough (Forest) and dont know who Derbys no. 4 is.
Might be Bristol City as Forest weren't in Div 1 that year (assuming the photo is from 76-77 season).
Good shout, observation wise. Yep, that's Coventry FC all right. Note the long stripe on the edge of the shirt in the photo, and the markings on the socks..?
The Coventry City player could be David Cross [note sideburns] : http://www.sporting-heroes.net/football-heroes/displayhero_club.asp?HeroID=39254
Remember the Coventry away kit of chocolate brown, with the same black and white lines? When I was at Padnell Middle School in Cowplain we had the same style kit, but in yellow, for the 2nd year football team. We reached the Portsmouth district cup final and I scored twice for Padnell , but we lost 4-3
That's a back handed compliment..! No, I'm just old enough to remember those times. Plus I went looking on the Net to confirm my thoughts. Tbf, I would never have thought that was Coventry City, unless Colin had suggested it.
The team in red and white in the second book is definitely Bristol City, you can tell from the flashes down the sleeves. The player could be Tom Ritchie.
