An obvious one - but one for the late John Peel:

Technically Killing Joke, The Damned and The Cure are Goths, The Jam were Mods and a few others might struggle to be categorised as Punk.

I agree The Jam were followed by many that were in the Mod culture and they encouraged that, but their lyrics were very Punk in style.

It's debatable, but when I was at school in late 70s / 80s they were regarded as Goths but I think they're borderline. Heres the Wiki definition:
'The Damned are an English gothic punk band formed in London in 1976. They were the first punk rock band from the United Kingdom to release a single ("New Rose"), an album (Damned Damned Damned), to have a record on the UK music charts, and to tour the United States. The Damned later evolved into one of the forerunners of the gothic genre.'

They weren't a favoutite of mine anyway. I was into UK Subs - no debate about them, they were a great punk band.

Stuff and nonsense, the term Goth didn't exist until much later.

The Damned were one of the first punk bands, the Cure toured only with Siouxsie and the Banshees(due to Robert Smith playing in both bands), Killing Joke were one of the most influential punk bands ever and The Jam started punk and got progressively more mod(Weller was always mod influenced, but the early stuff like In the City, News of the World, Modern World were very much punk tracks, driven mainly by bass player Bruce Foxton, who went on to join Stiff Little Fingers).

I'm afraid if you had called The Jam Punks at my school you would have gone home with two black eyes, one from the Mods and the other from the Punks. As regards The Damned read my response to UnaBomber's post.
The Cure are probably the biggest Goth band of all time (no matter who they toured with) and Wiki refers to Killing Joke as: an English post-punk band formed in October 1978 in Notting Hill, London, England; other sources report the band formed in early 1979.
A key influence on industrial rock, their early music was described by critics Stephen Thomas Erlewine and John Dougan as "quasi-metal ... dancing to a tune of doom and gloom", which gradually evolved over the years, incorporating elements of electronic music, synth-pop, gothic rock, and alternative rock, though always emphasising Coleman's "savagely strident vocals."
