In 1801, Middlesbrough was a small farm with a population of just 25. Joseph Pease of Darlington needed a port for his coal ships, so created 'Port Darlington' and brought in Irish labourers to create what became Middlesbrough. This increase was fuelled in 1841when Henry Bolckow and John Vaughan of Wales, discovered ironstone deposits in the Eston Hills. The name 'Middlesbrough' predates the settlement, and possibly relates to an abbey located halfway between Whitby and Durham. It is 'brough' rather than 'borough' due to a spelling error when it was given its charter in 1853. Middlesbrough was the first major British town and industrial target to be bombed during the Second World War. 2 Yorks – The 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards) infantry regiment are very strongly associated with Middlesbrough. Mallik Wilks will not be involved at Middlesbrough on Saturday, Hull City boss Shota Arveladze has confirmed, as the striker continues to recover from a series of injuries suffered this season. Wilks has recovered from a foot injury that kept him sidelined for a lengthy period of time having picked up his problem at Nottingham Forest before Christmas and continues to take a full part in training at the Tigers’ Cottingham base. The 23-year-old returned off the bench in the win at Peterborough United last month, but hasn’t featured since, and with Wilks out of contract this summer, speculation is mounting about his future with no decision understood to have been taken yet about his or the other seven players seeing their deals come to an end. Arveladze, speaking to Hull Live ahead of Saturday’s trip to the Riverside Stadium, says Wilks will not be considered for selection at this stage. "He’s been out for quite a long time when I arrived, I spoke to him two or three times. I thought we had a really good understanding but again, this is daily, we have to go every day, every session and game (and see what happens). “Mallik’s a fantastic lad, a really good boy. I’m waiting for him to get really fit and I’ll talk to him, maybe, we need his energy and speed back. That’s what I’ve not seen yet. One week he was good, winter came back and he was ill again. It’s also luck, sometimes, it could help us both. “It’s difficult for them to get back in shape. It is frustrating because you want everyone to be available and make your decisions tougher. He can play as the main striker, second striker, off the wing. “With the body he has, if you get a tear in his thigh or his hamstring, it really pulls and I know this, my teammates experienced it before. When a player is quick and powerful and they experience this tear, it takes a long time to recover.” https://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/sport/football/shota-arveladze-reveals-hull-city-6927166
In his mind, Mallik finishes all his chances like that. Nice words from Shota. A kind of way of saying that he thinks Wilks is a bit chubby just now.
Not quite sure why I'm going to this! Not looking forward to it at all. 90 minutes of, at best, watching us try and scrape a backs to the wall draw, memories of it "kicking off" outside last time I was there. Just want the season over and our status as a championship club somehow secured.
“They’ve got some really good young players. (George) Honeyman is a local boy, (Keane) Lewis-Potter is taking a lot of plaudits this season through fabulous performances and Jacob Greaves is a young centre-half. They did a couple of bits of business in January when the new manager came in. But they’ve been relatively consistent and I would imagine they’re relatively happy with their first season back in the Championship. "Mission accomplished in terms of being in the division another season. I think they will be, they’ll get the job done and they’ll build from there. New owner, new manager and they’ll want a strong positive end to the season like we all do. We all want that big finish to go into next year.” - Chris Wilder
Absolutely going to get tonked today, we’ve been on the verge of getting beat by a big score, but the refs have been lenient, so Middlesbrough will get at least 2 penalties, Jacob Greaves could be sent off for at least 2 bookable offences. We might have a shot on target, depends if the midget striker who we loft the balls into the box to try & beat the much taller CB’s can catch a break, highly unlikely. So I’m going minimum 4-0 to Boro! Could be 6 or 7!
