Iââ¬â¢m posting this on both the Sunderland and Newcastle forums, not to WUM but because Iââ¬â¢m interested in your views, hopefully the grown up fans from each side will comment. Like many of you I came over from 606 and remember the day we heard that 606 was to close. Our home was under threat and on mass we deserted to a new one, no surprise there. Itââ¬â¢s not until you look at the other clubs boards that the scale of the Newcastle and Sunderland exodus becomes clear, we are by far the biggest and most active forums, why? We all know about the clichés, hot bed of soccer, sleeping giants, passionate supporters. Surely we canââ¬â¢t be more passionate than the scousers, the mancs and the mass support in London? Iââ¬â¢m sure the other areas will say, we have to much time on our hands, we need to get a life and all the other easy get outs but we know we do OK on the life side in the North East so no, far to easy to dismiss us in that way. But it goes deeper, we hear about the traditional hatred between our teams and fans, sorry to burst the bubble but if we do hate each other we hide it well. By far the largest amounts of posts on our boards but in truth, apart from around derby time, we tend to stay on our own boards discussing our own teams, we should be proud of that. My view is that we donââ¬â¢t have that deep hatred because we tend to live in the same areas, work at the same places and most of us have mates who actually support the other side. I think we have the biggest forums because we really are more passionate about our teams, enjoy discussing them and as soppy as it may sound, both sets of supporters really are like a football family, one in Red and White and one in Black and White.
Good post Syd. I've got a lot of friends that support NUFC and we all love football and are far from hating each other. One of my friends is a lifelong NUFC season ticket holder and I'm his first sons Godfather so we must get along. Not sure if I could sit through a derby match with him though !!
As i grew up in Washington, i was brought up in a total 50/50 environment.....all of my closest friends are geordies....the godfathers of my sons are both avid Newcastle fans..... It's all down to passion...we love our football, we are proud of the north east and that inherently keeps us close....we are only completely seperate for 2 occasions a year...if we are in the same division that is!!!
Once again Syd lovely post, i have no hate for Newcastle and have friends both in the forces and civvy street, but these new brain dead ones do hit the spot with me, always on the board, no constructive comments, spouting hate and always giving derogatory remarks, just like the forces you stand your ground and give back as good as you get, The hardest part for me is the big Chisses of this world, just cant understand them so i rearly comment.
I think that other clubs fans have just not left 606 in the way that Sunderland and fans have (nowt childish there then eh). 606 is largely still a vibrant forum, just not in our case. Why that Sunderland fans were so quick to jump ship is another matter...Personally, I still contribute on 606, and will do until it ends...
syd it a tricky one, i was born a stones throw from roker park, many up the road were born not to far from their ground, so that was a decision made for us, but its the north east and its totally divided, your goodself for example living in coxhoe, i expect its 50/50, its about bloodlines etc, i expect not to many cross over their family lines, but it must be hard for the people in between cities to make that choice. do i believe their is a hatred? yeah for sure but only for a minority of hard core fans (thats why im glad i joined up at 17 and left that **** behind) for the rest, impossible, work together, live together drink together. i have many skunk friends(i can call them that because they give the same back) and when youre away from home its a north-east family (exept derby day of course) 7.gordon armstrong mid 416 appearances 61 goals
I don't, some of the commentary like the Roker Report and Argus are on both sites anyway, I go there less and less often. I think I read on here that the Mags jumped ship and in the process, got themselves banned on 606 for 'clever' posts on our board. I came here, after a post referring to 'Vinegar Joe' by one the regulars - when I found this site I stopped posting to 606. I guess we're very competitive Syd. When I discovered the Mags were also active, I thought -well, there's no point in being active on any other forum really.
cheers mate its gonna be my signature tune, safc top 50 most appearances, glad you like, gods know what i'll do after that 8 charlie buchan ir/cf 411 appearances 222 goals
Was number of users/posts/views data available on 606? If it is, is it a case of non-migratory species versus migratory and the posters from the other teams are yet to face reality and joined here? If not how do we know that this isn't how the awful 606 was? With other fans just not obsessing about their clubs to the same degree. And tonnes of us northern idiots with nowt else we like talking about. I would like to know anyway.
It is like we are kindreds Dazzla same for me. Weshington lad so all my mates bar one were Mags. We argue about current and past teams, even commiserate with each other when one set of fans is getting shafted (More them than me recently ). Unlike some other we actively seek to watch the Derby games together... We find it makes it more fun and some off the hissy fits we have (we'll lets say I was a tad stroppy for the 5-1 thrashing) are classic.
How about a top 50 sunderland memories (with associated graphics of course) might be a thread ruinner like as we may end up discussing your sigs instead of the post....... Oh look what just happened there oh the irony BTW loving the history lessons
Might as well carry on with my own personal opus to extend this thread and say good post Syd, now back to work
To answer the original question, I would say that Manchester United and Liverpool have the most forum activity anywhere. I think the North East run's them a close second but it's certainly those two who have the most fans - whether they be genuine match day fans or sad plastics, those two teams win hand's-down.
Dont hate anyone Syd, with the exception of government jobsworths, taxmen, etc but thats nowt to do with local rivalry, which is a part and parcel of football. And dont we all [RED AND WHITE....BLACK AND WHITE] just love the derbys, our very own championship league/fa cup all rolled into one. and only two teams can enter.
