I don’t know why whoever wins the election with the most MPs, every area has an MP from that party , that way they have 5 years to sink or swim and have nobody to blame. Hopefully if they do well they will get in again on merit if they don’t they will get the boot, although there will always be some idiots who vote for the opposite party even if the streets are paved with gold.
No difference then, but at least I would think that my vote (Green by the way) would count for something somewhere, atm I do not get even that satisfaction. Mind you the latest energy strategy is a classic coming from the nimby Government, as is the Chancellor's family tax avoidance scams, no wonder they refuse to implement windfall taxes on the rampant energy supply companies.
I’m not sure how long it will take, but Starmer has made it one of his priorities to get them out of the party, he had limited success last year when he managed to get a watered down Electoral College passed at conference. He has also expelled quite a few Momentum supporters and Corbyn has had the whip removed and is still suspended from the Labour Party If you remember the boast of 600,000 + Labour party members and Corbyn on the stage at Glastonbury. That all followed the Collins report 2014 which got rid of the Electoral College and introduced One Man One Vote, so Momentum took advantage and swamped the party membership with left wing voters who went on to elect Corbyn leader.
Probably my biggest want in politics is to implement PR. It’s the only way to drive some change in the big two/4 and make you feel like you have a choice and a voice. Like I’ve said before I’d probably vote Green but it’s pointless with this system unless you’re in Brighton. There’s a danger though that this thread says away from the criticism of the dire current incumbents. All I hear is ‘what about Labour’. These current lot need changing. They are unethical, anti democratic, disrespectful of the rule of law, dishonest, corrupt and incompetent. Anyone denying this need to supply some evidence they aren’t as described without mentioning Labour/Corbyn.
I can’t stand Momentum - it’s a dangerous movement within a movement and feels threatening for democracy within the party which should be open to each individual’s choice and perspective. The only thing I did like about Labour in that era was the increasing numbers of politically active young people. It’s a shame that the youth vote to remain failed only because it felt like a hammer blow to young peoples participation in democracy. My son now thinks it’s pointless cos the oldies win in first past the post. I seriously think it’s important that PR enables the ‘losers’ voice to be important even if we don’t like it, or democracy isn’t working.
It's hilarious when men pretending to be women can affect the prospects of politicians pretending to be honest.
How many on here disagree with you about the Tories? I know there’s a lot who disagree with you thinking Labour is any better though.
Regarding the Tories I think that Rooch is right . . . . as far as I know they've never mentioned, or even hinted about a hatred towards migrants. It's also not hatred or being racist to be concerned about the effect that those like Wishy Washy's wife have on the UK (our) economy, 'cos I don't mind anybody choosing to live in the U.K. as long as they're prepared to live (to a large extent) 'our way' but for her to choose to be non-domicile to avoid paying U.K. taxes is deplorable, and this could have a bearing on future voting, and rightly so. For anybody to avoid U.K. tax like this is completely wrong, it shows massive disrespect for the U.K. tax system that most us have no choice but to comply with, and it's much worse 'cos she's the chancellor's wife . . . . who is taking, and being allowed to take, the mickey out of the country that she chose to live in, rather than India, where she's apparently from.
Do you know of any reason why the ordinary self employed bloke can’t do the same thing, there must be some reason?
Maybe we're not clever, or earning, enough . . . . I haven't thought about it much (and won't be doing so 'cos it'll hurt my head)
The problem is that the potential replacements look just as bad, albeit in different ways. Funnily enough though what we're saying about the Tories now is similar to what we were saying about Labour in 2010. And what I'm sure we'll be saying about the next Labour government when their time is up. If that's not an indication that something other than the rosette colour needs to change, I don't know what is.
I agree it seems like it’s largely Labour Tory or protest but the smaller parties would gain a bigger voice and influence and that would lead to negotiation in the direction of the political opinion of the public, even for the winner.
There are a few who don’t even recognise what I say they just say Labour Corbyn Abbott blah blah blah
We don’t seem to like negotiation and collaboration in this country. Even the place they sit and how they sit in parliament is about us v them separation. Winner, loser, black, white, blue, red all feeds the traits of the power hungry not the power sharers. I’ve met good Conservative MP’s who I don’t entirely agree with but their more liberal views are drowned by extremists and the Labour Party is Momentum v Blairite. We should celebrate the grey / mixed areas more and respect the fact that diversity is a strength and that complex problems have multi faceted solutions. In a way lots of conversations on here were about whether you chose the extreme reds or the extreme right. Now it seems like Starmer is less extreme but more establishment and Johnson has gone ideologically out of control. Look at the C4 stuff. Thought control.
It would be nice if they could form a party with the middle ground MPs from both parties. That would be a win win for us voters but they are to thick to see that.
But you and your mates should be blaming Corbyn and Abbot as well, they lost you the election so that’s why we’ve got this s hit now , so it’s nobody else’s fault but your own.
Didn’t they try it ? I’m probably far from being a centrist in way. I think we need drastic change for the planet, society everything - especially in regard to how we value money, just both of the options on the table seem backward looking.
I agree mate but how do you get different parties making any attempt to change things when they are probably getting £150,000 + for doing absolutely f uck all. There is nothing short of a revolution left to try.
I follow these if anyone’s interested in looking at PR https://www.electoral-reform.org.uk...e-voting-systems/proportional-representation/
