I’m posting this on both the Sunderland and Newcastle forums, not to WUM but because I’m interested in your views, hopefully the grown up fans from each side will comment.

Like many of you I came over from 606 and remember the day we heard that 606 was to close. Our home was under threat and on mass we deserted to a new one, no surprise there. It’s not until you look at the other clubs boards that the scale of the Newcastle and Sunderland exodus becomes clear, we are by far the biggest and most active forums, why?

We all know about the clichés, hot bed of soccer, sleeping giants, passionate supporters. Surely we can’t be more passionate than the scousers, the mancs and the mass support in London?

I’m sure the other areas will say, we have to much time on our hands, we need to get a life and all the other easy get outs but we know we do OK on the life side in the North East so no, far to easy to dismiss us in that way.

But it goes deeper, we hear about the traditional hatred between our teams and fans, sorry to burst the bubble but if we do hate each other we hide it well. By far the largest amounts of posts on our boards but in truth, apart from around derby time, we tend to stay on our own boards discussing our own teams, we should be proud of that.

My view is that we don’t have that deep hatred because we tend to live in the same areas, work at the same places and most of us have mates who actually support the other side.

I think we have the biggest forums because we really are more passionate about our teams, enjoy discussing them and as soppy as it may sound, both sets of supporters really are like a football family, one in Red and White and one in Black and White.

The thing with Mancs, Arsenal, Liverpool etc is that you get a lot of 'plastic' supporters that go to games and that don't actually go on sites like these...
Anyway people may just be waiting untill 606 actually closes to move...

I find that most of the 'hatred' between the two sets of fans is just banter and the odd wumming, I rarely see any genuine hatred on forums, but there are some ****s who take the rivalry too seriously.

Other forums have higher numbers from different clubs - new606 for instance has more Liverpool and Chelsea posts than any other team (still not many compared to here though)

    Your a right T***!!!!!

:emoticon-0105-wink: Haha only joking! I think it does have a bit to do with the clichés, but more than that.

Our fans (on these boards anyway) are in the majority well spoken, articulate and intelligent. When I've been and looked on the other boards its just flame wars! No constructive discussions, no well laid out arguments, no proper debate!

I'm glad we are the best on these boards, long may it continue! :emoticon-0125-mmm:

I for one have never slept with a giant even though I perhaps do have far too much time on my hands...

    As for the fans?

We're rivals but there is still a certain respect between both sets of fans because if we're honest; neither of us has set the world alight with our footballing prowess and the lack of trophies combined between us is testament to that, yet we're still both going strong in terms of support that can be traced back decades.

(Sure, certain seasons there was a measurable drop in attendances but look back to those times and the mitigating circumstances that surround the dips. All share a common factor and that was personal finance)

We banter between ourselves and many times it's not the malicious type either (though there are some that seem to have a deep rooted hatred of the other side). Look at Man Utd, Liverpool fans etc on these forums and it's almost a hatred with cross forum posts. It's not a passion for your team...

I noticed on the old 606 that we were both amongst the busiest of boards, although Arsenal, Man utd and Liverpool seemed pretty busy too. I can only assume that many of their posters have gone to other sites.

I think that we both must be amongst the most passionate of fans because for two clubs to have had so little success for decades, to still attract the volumes of fans that we do, tells its own story.

I love the rivalry between our clubs and fans, but I certainly don't hate any mackems...............you lot have given me some of the best laughs I've ever had!!

"I for one have never slept with a giant"

    I have.

Remember one night performing and asked if I could turn the light off, she asked if it was because I was shy.

I said "No, the bulb's burning me arse".

tbh, I'm not particularly fussed if many other teams suppoters come to not606; we've got nearly all of our boys.

As for banter... That's why the Mackems were invented :)

I don't think there is any real hatred between our fans, it's just a laugh. I mean, c'mon, who could take the mackems seriously? :D

I lived with a Sunderland fan once (I say lived but I had to keep him in a cupboard under the stairs because he kept interfering with the neighbours cat).... and erm...

So. I've been through the aversion therapy and it helped me give up fried foods. Can't look at a KFC without thinking of Sewpa Kev now <shudder>.

Made me half the man I used to be.
