Russia wants them to pay for their gas using Rubles via Russian bank accounts. That is one way of getting around the international financial sanctions.

The EU will pay because they are not actually delivering on any of their other threats whilst Britain is supplying weapons and logistics to Ukraine and we should just switch off our small dependency on Russian gas and stop paying them. Who was supposed to be in Russia’s pocket? It seems like it is Germany and the EU.
