I thought it would be Patrese (monaco 82), but as it wasn't, i'll take a shot at Tambay, though i believe he had retired at the end of the 80's.

sorry for the delay people , i thought everybody had forgotten about the topic ,

the person i had in mind when you go deep into his career record had an exceptional record in the wet bettered only by senna during the period i mentioned , the driver had many 2nd places and one win -

" all saints chris " came the closest with the right driver but wrong race ( mansell did not put wet tyres on at spain 91 ) and the race was only marginally damp at the start )

the driver was mansell and the race was france 1992 , as i say apart fron senna his wet race accumilation of points for that period was better than anybody else ( i think ) ---

I always had the impression Mansells weak point was wet racing

thats probally because nigel never seemed to win any wet races , senna very much dominated nearly all the wet races between 1985 - 1993 , however nigel had a very good average in wet races during that time that went largely unnoticed ---

Often un-noticed from Portugal 85 was that Mansell started from the back of the grid and finished 5th.

Xig, Spain 91 was a wettish race to start with as Senna and others started on wets and didn't change, whereas Mansell started on dry tyres on a damp track. Senna's tyres went off quickly, as did others, so those that were on dry and kept their cars on the circuit during the tricky opening laps benefited.

Don't recall France 92 being wet though. Will have to go look that one up. I could be wrong!

probally my mistake -- i have not watched the race for about 10yrs , i seemed to recall the race was damp at the start and not wet enough for wets , cant be bothered to fire up the dvd at this time of night ,
thinking about it , it rings a vague bell that some of the drivers started on wets --
