T. I understand that Nescafé’s works football team had the same issues as their bosses all thought success would be instant. Mind, their bosses are a dozy bunch and need to wake up and smell the coffee.
Clearly they're going to temper expectations from the market. The reality will be very different, of course - if people are available and they fit the model, they'll be bought. I think it'll be something like 'money no object, if the player is right'. And at the moment, the likes of Haland, etc., won't be "right" - mainly because they won't want to be here yet!! But also because Eddie Howe's not going to want someone like Dybala rocking up on £300k a week. That stuff takes time. However, if someone genuinely next-level or higher, like Bellingham, Schick, Jonathan David, Nunes, or whoever, actually indicates he's keen, we'll be bidding. Ashworth will also have his eyes on a number of Bissouma/Lamptey types that he would've been targeting for Brighton, who we now blow out the water. We have more appeal than all but 6 clubs. West Ham will have a bit of appeal, Gerrard brings something to Villa, but ultimately we just have more money so if there's a financial battle, we'll win. I think we'll end up with a hugely exciting Summer and a massively optimistic look for next season.
£90m ish is still a ****tonne as it goes. Buy a striker like Nuñez and a defender like Carlos, and the team goes to a whole other level.
I can see a couple more Brighton players being picked that's for sure and I think they'll look to bring in a marque striker. Schick night be more likely than Nunez
Yeah, Bissouma's head seems to have been turned. I agree on the marquee striker, though I think Jonathan David might be the most likely. Depends on the price of Osihmen. Arsenal will probably nab one of the next levels - Schick or Nunes. By God we need one, probably two, one youngster depending on how good Dylan Stephenson is.
He posted on October to say the clubs position had changed and they would spend more. Tbh Staveley did an interview that said exactly that just before January
I could be wrong but my recollection was of the Club underplaying any January spend so as to try and avoid automatically inflated prices carrying a “Newcastle United” tax. It appeared to work with some eg Trippier and Burn but not others eg Botman and Carlos. I figure it will be the same thing in the summer.
Bear in mind I'm still having to put up with Wood and Gayle on the bench, Ashley memories are still very fresh (Joe Willock the only transfer the previous 18 months or so), so this headline from a sports website made me chuckle: Report: Newcastle United decide against summer move for Neymar And there were no exclamation marks, no sarcasm. I mean, WTAF lads.
The owners have something many fans simply don't which is patience. It's a word Staveley was drilling home over and over early on, but 8 weeks later the toys were out the pram because business was as many described it underwhelming. It turned out they spent very well. I think yourself and many others know it's all about what you get and spending as little as possible to get what you need.
We'll sign who we need. Priority - 1. Striker - Desperately. Wilson cannot be relied upon to play more than 15-20 games a season. 15-30m 2. Targett. Since Enrique left, we've had fek all at LB. This lad has fit right in. 10-15m would be bargain for PL proven LB. 3. CB. 20-30m 4. Another creative midfielder or winger. 15-20m If we can get 4-5 in, that would be enough. We don't need any massive signings. Our target next season should be top 10. 2022/23 - Top 10 2023/24 - Europa That's as ambitious as I'm willing to be.
I think a real prem quality striker and CB would maybe cost more than that, but overall agree. Would be good to have another (maybe younger) striker in as well, as still not a lot of depth there. 4 new 'first-teamers' and a younger back-up to develop. So: Targett, CB, attacking midfielder/winger, centre forward, plus a young winger/striker.
I'd love him, but he knocked back seat ham in January and that means he wants and knows a champions league club is interested. You never know, but I think those kind of signings are a couple of good seasons away.
Yeah a lot of the bigger names will want champions league football and ro be competing for trophies at national club level. We won't be there for a few years. But if the signings are sensible then we can build up to it.
I don't think we should be spending that much on one player when we're just surviving relegation and targeting top 10. Amanda has said it will be a slow process. We don't need a champions league squad yet. I think there's no need to spend more than 100m per season, not window.
Next season - ASM--------New ST-------New winger/Fraser ----Joelinton------Willock/New CM----- ----------------Bruno-------------- Targett-Burn--New CB--Trippier ----------------Dubz--------------
