Guessing they feel it's enough to increase profitability and in turn save the business

If they were just losing 800 positions then yes you'd think that but no, they're being replaced. How much cheaper can overseas labour be? Although I suppose if they're employing the labour in a different country it might be significant, if that's what they're doing.

Most organisations I have worked for could easily lose 20-30% of the highest paid staff with no loss of efficiency, just by some sensible reorganisation. If you do this first, the lower paid employees realise that economies are necessary. How about the chief executive giving back his bonuses for the last 5 years?

They made a £20m loss in their last filed accounts, but are only half way through their next accounting year, so nobody knows how much they're losing currently (other than them obviously).

True. Same in my past experiences. But, P&O have been struggling for years, so such re-organisations have likely already been done, hence the decision to now go for this 'nuclear' option.
As for the parent group or other parts of the wider organisation being profitable, unfortunately that's irrelevant - business just doesn't work like that; shareholders / investors / owners aren't ok with it being some sort of charity that allows one part of the group to support non-viable other parts.

The "nuclear option" could well turn out to be extremely expensive.

Sky and BBC reporting security staff at Larne taking crewmen off ships in handcuffs, if true that is a total disgrace.

NSF are very close to my heart, a couple of you on here know the background. How this has been handled is a disgrace. My Dad, RIP, must be turning in his grave.

Businesses are ran for the shareholders these days, the vast majority don’t give a **** about their staff, customers, suppliers etc. As long as the shareholders are fine that’s all that matters. It is a disgrace.

They took £10m in furlough, asked the Government for a £150m contribution to a £250m bailout, yet DP World still gave themselves dividends of £250m. Yes, DP World are the parent and not directly P&O, but it shouldn’t be allowed.

Use the route regularly, been at about 15-20 % capacity for a while post covid. Having to drive down to the tunnel then home but that's nothing compared to losing your job, poor sods. Suspect it'll end up with 1 passenger ferry and probably a freight ferry. Shame if it goes, my favourite option for Netherlands.

I’d be highly surprised if the ONLY way to save the business was to immediately terminate the contracts of all of your British based workforce.

The most incandescent I've seen a local MP for some time, Karl Turner on Peter Levy.
