Yes finally got it sorted out Mrs BMB. Took quite a while before I could access it.

There seem to be a few of us septuagenarians (?) still following the Tigers. Would love to stay around long enough to see us back in the Prem. Maybe next year when some of us are having a reunion at the KC in August .

There'll never be another Raich...the Silver Fox!!

It started up a bloody good debate. I think the thing about it, as I said previously, is the age thing. Although it is interesting to note that some of the more recent supporters would vote for some of the much older players on the basis that Dads and Grandads have told them all about them.

This type of 'list' or faves or whatever is never going to get it right and please the broad spectrum of Hull City supporters. But David Bond was a stalwart reporter and yes to some he may be stuck in a time warp, there are two more I thought worthy, Ken Knighton and Bill Baxter, tough defenders both, that were not included.

But its the old arguments all over again, years ago it was Best, Charlton, Hurst, Peters, St John, etc etc and if we do get promoted again will the current team be worthy of that praise? And I must say its getting tiresome now that because certain players got us into the Premiership, after 104 years of trying, they are head and shoulders above all previous Hull City players.

Yes we did get there but were soon dumped right back down again, despite a reprieve courtesy of Newcastle United, there were plenty of good matches played whilst Hull City were not in the Premiership and precious few when in it.

Hull City Legends should be those 18 in the match squad at Wembley, Phil Brown and Paul Duffen.

Not sure I see where you're coming from here - very few people are sugesting that some of the Premiership 'stars' like Geovanni, Boateng, Zayatte or even Turner should be included. What they're suggesting are club stalwarts that moved with the club through the lower divisions and into the Premiership (Dawson, Barmby and especially Ashbee) making 100s of appearances and innumerate valuable match contributions while showing loyalty, passion and committment (what really marks you out for 'legend' status for me) both on the way up but also on the way back down again. That's what makes them legends in my eyes, not because 'they were there when we won at the Emirates'.

The problem that I see with lists like this is what is a legend? The word is used far too often in my opinion. I looked it up in the dictionary but the definition includes:

"a person whose fame or notoriety makes him a source of exaggerated or romanticized tales or exploits"
    which doesn't particularly help.

According to that definition Bullard would be a tigers legend (not that I am saying for one minute he should be on the list).

I suspect if everyone PM'd me with what they think makes a person a legend no 2 answers would be the same so I suppose the list that people come up with would depend on what they considered constitutes a legend.

Jimmy, the definition you gave is as good a definition as any, but using those criteria you wouldn't have enough players to make a top 20

in football terms to me, a club legend is someone who made significant difference and impact on the club, who if they didnt come to the club, life would have been very different..
some may argue we may have made it to the premier league anyway from league 2 , no matter who was captaining them along the way, no way of ever proving that really, what can be proven is under one mans leadership it did happen, and that is legendary!

I remember Willie Buchan he was signed from Blackpool, a scotish international, and my favourite long before Raich Carter came. As you say, Ace penalty taker, always sent the goalie the wrong way.
Then there was Frank McCorrigan great inside forward but was troubled with bunnions and could run far, but excellent skills on the ball. We ought to talk about The non-legends, there are millions of them,.

One of the Hull City sites which has a legends list has the following basic selection criteria.

    1. Ex- Hull City player, Manager,Director or Member of Staff(or combination of these)
    2. Played at least 80 appearances( including cup and friendlies) or with the club at least 5 years. Condition may be waved in special circumstances.
    3. Made a major contribution to the team over a number of years.
    4. or Made a major impact on the team at the time defined as something that lasted longer than two seasons.
    5. To have left the club at least 5 years unless a special case can be made. This is to allow for perspective.
    6. Of good charachter.

Overall a legend is defined as someone meeting the above criteria who has made a major positive impact on the fortunes of Hull City AFC since the formation of the club in 1904.

The site lists 30 such legends but was last updated at the end of 2001.For those interested it can be found on the Hull City mad board.

Aquick comparison between Ash and the other defensive mdfielder I remember on the list,Brian Horton.

Horton played just 38 times and never scored. He took Appletons side that should've been promoted in 84 up the following year as player/manager then finished a credible 6th in div 1 the following year. Was wrongly sacked after bad home defeat,a decision that started the slide that didn't turn til the Ashbee era.Returned under Brown to help take us to the PL.

Ash was sent off in his first game but scored the goal that hailed the start of the journey at Yeovil.Got promoted the following season.Didn't emerge from the Parkinson era wth much credit but paid us back by leading City to the PL at Wembley.
Fought off the threat of being in a wheelchair twice and in August 2008 became the only player in English football history to captain his club from the bottom league to the top.Played 246 times and scored 10 and would be well over 300 if it wasn't for injury.

Nobby was great,Ash is the legend.

I'll grant you Ashbee as a legend under some criteria but as a for footballing skill he was little above mediocre and for disciplinary reasons he was strictly a liability.

Seriously If the debate is that legends are those who got the club promotion etc then you have to look at the `959 promotion squad, Paul Feasey, Colin Smith and Bill Bradbury for instance. Its an impossible task to be honest as we all remember different eras.

This comment is a joke. His disciplinary record wasn't that bad at all. For a player in his position, playing there for so long, I'd bet he has one of the better records among comparible players.

To say his skill was mediocre basically says you don't appreciate his style of play. Just because he wasn't an attacking player doesn't mean he was crap. His abaility to read passes and intercept was fantastic, something Chester does now and no one says his ability is mediocre.

It has nothing to do with his lack of attacking qualities and as for his ability to intercept .........That was the problem he did most of his intercepting with his body checks !!He got countless yellow cards and gave away free kicks in dangerous areas due to his lack of ability.Add to that his lack of pace inability to pick out a pass (Except sideways or backwards to Dawson) ......................... I rest my case. Definitely MEDIOCRE.
