ban speaking during games thats the solution!!!!! The players could have prerecorded messages on iphones such as pass, shoot and are you ****ing "blind" ref, then it would be simple to look at there iphones for racist messages.
Hang on wait, that would be using technology wouldn't it, ok scratch that!

Fair enough but what would an official be able to do? Practically what would it achieve??

He's not going to stop the game and conduct an investigation there and then. He might say something to the other player but nothing more I suspect.

Though maybe he should have made a complaint immediately following the game.

I dont get the terry one personally!!! wasnt the ref talking to Anton at the time, in which case surely he heard what terry shouted. IMO this has become a problem because the slow responce of the FA on the Suarez afair, if theres no proof then just say there's no evidence and leave it at that. I expect to see several more claims this season just because people know the FA will be slow to deal with it and it might give there team advantage by causing problems in the other team. This is surely what furguson and evra were trying to do with liverpool and it makes me feel a bit like football is a dying sport which i enojoy less and less with each passing year!

I don't get it? Who exactly is arguing? It's a debate over what happened, nobody has gone off topic (totally) or started insulting each other.

On the Liverpool board we've been through and through the whole issue of racism already.

Perhaps I am being too sensitive. I have very good friends in Tobago. Those friendships have been built over many years and we can say things to each other in private that we would not say in public because we are assured that we would never hurt/insult each other. The whole idea of racism abhores me. However, when such a charge is made it is nearly impossible to prove or deny to everybody's satisfaction. This is made worse when the media (for their own venal interests) then stoke the issue up.

If we keep treading over the ground the truth gets lost and we end up with some kind of tribal warfare that does none of us any good.

I'm just being careful to make sure there is no arguing. I could see things turning sour very quickly.

I admit, part of the argument is about whether people are arguing or not.

In practice (and in public) it's not so easy though, Dave. The only choices we have are to either say it's acceptable and people just have to live with it, or say it's abhorrent and punish people who use such language. As soon as you start bringing any level of 'middle ground' into the debate it all goes awry. Trying to allow certain phrases due to context, situation, background etc muddies the waters so much, it becomes impossible to determine at which point offense has been caused. Is it OK to abuse someone because you're angry or tense? Of course not. Irrespective of whether such behaviour is in or out of character. People might be able to understand why you acted out of character, but it shouldn't excuse the behaviour.

I'm afraid that this is exactly the situation we find ourselves in though. and the 'arbiters of justice' at the FA don't have a sterling record of being able to cut through the mire and get to the truth, or to act decisively when they do.
