It's funny, because there was only 1 goal difference in the scoreline, but they were totally different games. Leeds caused us plenty of problems at the back and could've scored a few, while Everton were utterly toothless. One of those games could've ended up quite close, while the other could've been 10-0.
Oh yeah my bad. I just looked at the fixture list and saw the loss against Boro. Still remains though (I think) the last time Spurs won two games in a row was in December and both games were at home to teams fighting relegation. That’s why I’m not optimistic that they can find any consistency between now and the end of the season.
The real question is why we hate draws so much Not the first season recently where we flat out refused to draw games
Yeah in the last few years, does seem like Spurs rarely draw games. Think Spurs have lost 8 out of 24 under Conte which is ridiculously bad, if half of those were draws then things would seem much better
The reasons for it show definite strengths and weaknesses. The ability to get late goals pushing for a winner (the most I think in the PL this season). The inability get back into games at times - like Burnley, for example and being seemingly quite impotent. For most teams there are a few draws in there in either scenario. Very hot or very cold, that’s Spurs at times this season.
There was a little girl and she had a little curl. Right in the middle of her forehead. When she was good, she was very very good. But when she was bad, she was horrid. Sums us up atm in all honesty. And although DH will hate me for continuing to bang this particular unpopular drum, it goes back to what Brunel said about Arsenal as it very much resonated with me: Unless pretty much the whole team is playing well, we get nothing out of a game. In fact, we look like we could play for a week and get nothing out of the game. Now, whereas DH and others blame this on the shoddy level of quality across the squad, the more weeks go by the more annoyed I'm becoming at the fact that Kane and Son rarely step up to the plate when the going is tough, to change those defeats into the undeserved draws that are so often the bread an butter difference between a team that finishes 5th and the one that scrapes 4th. Case in point being Leicester last season who despite winning more games than Chelsea, still finished 5th as the latter managed to turn 3 of their defeats into draws whereas Leicester didn't.
How well we play tends to depend heavily on the style of play of the opposition. Teams that defend solidly and in numbers cause us a lot of problems. We lack creativity and only have only way of playing. If that fails, then so do we.
Wonder if Utd fans are thinking the same about Ronaldo? Pool 5-0, City 2-0 and Atleti 1-0 he’s now failed to score/ assist/ change a defeat to a draw. Not forgetting Wolves and Villa losses too (both 1-0s). It’s now almost a certainty Utd won’t be winning anything unless something absolutely bonkers happens in the league. Every player regardless of how brilliant they are can’t impact every single game they play. Yet without Ronaldo and without Kane (and Son), both teams will be considerably worse off. The only way you can improve potential results is to add more quality which can then “allow” for Kane/ Son/ Ronaldo and others in their positions to have generally rare off-days, not suggest they’re part of any problems or that they don’t step up enough when they’ve so often done so.
It’s a team game of 11 v 11; a forward relies on midfielders winning possession and creative players providing chances. There’s only so much you can do as an individual. Ronaldo hasn’t been able to influence some games at all because the team has been so outplayed in every department. He can do special things but miracles are beyond him. Heaven knows where Utd would be without him this season. Signed late yet still managed 18 goals, is it? Some of those were all his own work. You can’t say what would a team be without a certain player - because they have him. But you can say just look how bad they are even with him. True of Utd; to some extent true of Spurs and Kane.
This was a must win game, as I stated at the outset. The squad mentality is terrible (to hold on for the draw after being 2-1 down, or pushing on for the win) . I expect similar against the Spanners (another must win game) .
