As a kid in the 1960s, I still recall on a long journey stopping for a meal and the old man ordering scampi. Thought the name was funny. It was the proper stuff but fried in a light batter rather than the ubiquitous breadcrumbs. He let me try one and the taste when dipped in the tartare sauce was delicious and unlike anything else - I would then order it almost every time we went out for over a decade. Still enjoy it now. The last time I had scampi, it was in a Portuguese restaurant in South African about 5 years ago. That was also in batter as opposed to breadcrumbs. Without a doubt the best scampi I have ever tasted.
I haven't had them in years, but they were tasty. So they ****ing should have been considering you only got about 8 in a packet for a quid.
I very much doubt peasants could afford Scampi Fries, they were always the most expensive bar snack back in the day.
Not really keen on the fizz ... very much the realm of the small willied classless types who tend to mention it a lot...
