It's going to very strange and poignant when I next go to the Rose Bowl and look at the Shane Warne stand.

Russian driver Nikita Mazepin has been sacked by the Haas team as a result of his country's invasion of Ukraine.

The US-based outfit have also terminated the contract of their title sponsor, the Russian chemicals company Uralkali.

Uralkali is part-owned by Mazepin's billionaire father Dmitry, a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, through his company Uralchem.

Haas said news on Mazepin's replacement was expected early next week.

Among the drivers said to be under consideration are the team's reserve Pietro Fittipaldi, who stood in for Romain Grosjean for two races at the end of 2020 after the Frenchman's fiery accident in Bahrain, Indian Formula 2 driver Jehan Daruvala, and Alpine reserve driver Oscar Piastri, the reigning F2 champion.

Haas said in their statement: "As with the rest of the Formula 1 community, the team is shocked and saddened by the invasion of Ukraine and wishes for a swift and peaceful end to the conflict."

Mazepin's departure from F1 had been expected since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.

Dmitry Mazepin was one of a number of leading Russian businessmen invited to a meeting with Putin at the Kremlin hours after the invasion began.

Haas repainted their cars on 24 February, in the middle of the first Formula 1 pre-season test in Spain, to remove the red white and blue colours that had been on the car to represent the Russian flag since Mazepin joined at the start of 2021.

The FIA, motorsport's governing body, has stopped short of banning Russian drivers from international competition. It says they must compete as neutral athletes, and sign a document agreeing not to support the invasion.

Motorsport UK was this week one of a number of national motorsport authorities to ban Russian competitors from taking part in events in the UK.

There is debate as to whether this would ban a Russian driver from the British Grand Prix, as an F1 driver's super-licence contains a clause requiring national authorities to allow them to race.

But that point is now moot after Haas' decision to end their association with Mazepin.

    From the BBC

Italy's historic Imola circuit has secured a place on the Formula 1 calendar until at least 2025.

The track returned to the schedule in 2020 after a 15-year absence as part of F1's attempts to restructure the calendar in the middle of the pandemic.

Its success has led to a new deal for the next three seasons.

Formula 1 chairman Stefano Domenicali, who began his career working at Imola, said: "The circuit is iconic and has been part of the history of our sport."

From 1981 to 2006, the track's event was known as the San Marino Grand Prix, but its name changed when it returned to reflect support from the Emilia-Romagna province in which the race is located.

Imola's first grand prix was in 1980, when it held the Italian Grand Prix in place of Monza while renovations took place at the race's traditional home.

Domenicali added: "It is a proud moment for our Italian fans to host two races and for all our fans around the world to see this fantastic circuit on the calendar for the future."

I see it didn't take long for Red Bull to start bitching about the Mercedes car.

It seems to be what Red Bull do - moan continuously

I saw something suggesting they blamed Mercedes for Masi’s removal. Not, you know, his incompetence

Nope. I've watched the first 2. The next episode covers the Silverstone race so that should be fun.

Interesting to see that Charles has been channeling Yoda in pre-season testing…

It was always the most likely outcome. There's not many decent QB's on the market and they needed to free up cap space for this year.

Trade Cousins and draft one then, he will never win anything. His time has been and gone and they are just clinging onto the Vikings of 4 years ago who actually did have a Super Bowl calibre team.

The extension is relatively cheap which is about the only positive. But they are just delaying having to do an inevitable rebuild. The Bears and Lions are both **** atm so now is probably the best time to do one. Lots of talk they want to take a QB at 12 in the draft so have to see what happens there.

The new head coach is an offensive minded one so the way the contract is designed it looks to me like it’s a “prove it” type deal. If he is still average/**** then he’ll be gone but because of the void years the Vikings will be in worse shape cap wise than if they just sucked it up and cut him this year
