Sanchez lucky not to be sent off for the first yellow tbf. Was close to being a straight red. Still don’t think second yellow was a yellow but hey ho.

How that ref manages to referee in CL games if that’s his standard is a shocker though.

Sad to lose, especially a home game but maybe will give the players a bit of a kick as last few performances been a bit meh.

The commentator on my stream (sounded like Tyldesley) was saying how the ref has matured into a really fine official. <doh>
He said he thought Sanchez's second yellow was harsh, though he did say that Sanchez could have walked for the first half challenge, therefore implying that the ref got both decisions wrong. Still an excellent ref though, obvs.

Saint you’ll love the sky report for the game.

They actually mention how our offside trap kept inter at bay

but then in the next paragraph mention how Matip came in to partner Konate in one of the changes from West Ham game.

Just seen the highlights. Sounds like we didn't play that well, but we could have scored five. If we're going to have a game like that, then at least one where we still go through.

Didn't see the first Sanchez yellow, but the second was yellow for me. And if you're already on a yellow, don't give the ref decision to make. Otherwise can't comment on the ref's performance, though I still don't understand why he disallowed Rangers' goal against Dortmund.

Look at the game overall for context.

Ref wafted yellows for alm sorts of nothing but sanchez first was high, wild, a raking of the knee ffs. It's borderline red.

The second has no mitigation either he's again studs into the player cos he's out of control. He's fully caught the ankle ffs.

I'm ignoring in those two any sort of consistency or inconsistencies the ref show in wafting yellows at jota or mane or bookings to inter players for back chat etc.

They had a lot of the ball and pushed us back so I can understand people thinking they were better but i don't agree; we controlled everything they did, they didn't have many shots whereas we had some very good chances and hit the woodwork at least twice. IMO, it showed how versatile this team can be!

    They were crap up top.

3 woodworks hit, plus a few crapped out blocks says 5-1 was possible despite playing poorly. And we did play poorly.

The most important thing is we have a qf draw to look forward to.

    Bad result. Average Performance.

But even when we play poorly and don’t get out of first gear, we still hit the woodwork 3 times and had another 2 golden chances to score. All whilst restricting Inter to hardly any shots and them scoring a worldie out of nothing,

This is how strong this Liverpool team is.

Getting through to the QF is all that matters - and we did that.

Rio and some woman in the after match commentary were trying to say it's not even a yellow and that it was Fabinho's fault for getting there late.

They were then banging on about how refs should be ex players and they would then understand.

The referee and the post match analysis were absolutely shocking. Sanchez was very lucky not to be sent off for the first reckless challenge on Thiago.

The funniest bit is the ex players should be refs because they understand. Well you clearly don't so it's not a great advert for that change.

The idiotic pundits are talking about 'intent' because Sanchez didn't go in with malice or full force which is why they feel it's not a sending off.

What they dont realise is that intent is no longer part of the rules.

Both are out of control and excessive force as studs are involved, its just the rules.

I'd perfer pundits to show the rule and then describe why or why not than to bleat on about "in my day"

I'm constantly amazed at how so many ex-players are useless pundits. Of course they would say that we're the ones in the wrong.

IMO what they really mean is that "in their day" they wanted to get away with one like this as it wasn't "that hard" a contact.

the rules are clear enough. go to ground and most of the time you get punished one way or another. Defending is harder as you have to stay up and funnel people out or make a clear tackle or interception. If you slide in and connect in Europe you are lucky to get away with a yellow TBH. In England it depends totally on the ref and even on the type of game they are reffing.

Burnley away? thats not even a free on fabinho. if its against brighton at anfield its probably a yellow.

that ref last night was so inconsistent in frees given, cards given and just general being a jump up little twat that it was only natural peopel would pick on a red card. why him and not others etc.

Very weird game. They seemed to think their main task was to stop us scoring so they put all their effort into that which, as it turned out, worked in our favour.

You can add last night's refereeing onto the great mysteries of football list. Absolutely atrocious. Sanchez lucky not to see red for the first offence, right in front of the referee. Definite yellow for the second.

There were so many knee high studs up challenges by them going unpunished yet Jones gets yellow for a foul on him and similarly the lad with the outstretched arm pushing Mané full in the face and falling down holding his own head somehow results in a card for Mané. Are the refs still sponsored by Specsavers?

    Anyway, we're through :p
