Love the drive toward getting (expensive) gas out of homes in favour of electricity. Makes us less reliant on gas imports right? So how is half the electricity generated in this country?

    By burning gas.

I believe the increased importance of gas fired power stations happened partly as a result of the privatisation of the electricity industry. PowerSpurs will no doubt be able to correct me on this. I believe that gas fired power stations were relatively cheaper, and they were built by way of short term thinking.

Gas was historically thought to be a premium fuel with a nationwide delivery network so it was unwise to burn it in power stations. However pretty much simultaneous with privatisation two things happened....gas got much cheaper and people started setting CO2 emission targets so gas began to displace coal.
It is now possible to aim for carbon free electricity though so gas can be phased out of both home heating and power production but not quickly.

On the plus side, at least she isn't in a committee hearing claiming Dendias said something he didn't - with Dendias on the committee with the Hansard in front of him
