Does he realise that if he takes over Ukraine and makes it part of Russia again he we will have done exactly what he said he was doing this to stop and put Nato troops and weapons right on his border?

Just shows how paranoid he is about his position within Russia. He'd have no need to do that if he was confident he could keep the Russian people behind him if they knew the facts.
When you see the amount of tanks and vehicles just abandoned, it makes you wonder just how much the ordinary Russian soldiers really want to fight this war. Sure, they may have run out of diesel, but they may also just have been abandoned. I don't think the soldiers want to fight.
