Definitely wouldn’t rate the performance but the pitch was as bad as it gets so we had to go a bit more direct. At times the ball jumped in the air as it hit a bump!
Considering the awful pitch, which didnt suit our passing game, I think we adapted pretty well. Good to see better direct crosses, less pretty stuff and 70% domination again. I liked the Morsy Celina pairing too. Chaplin & Jackson had good games & Morsy was outstanding. Wish someone has a quiet word in Wolfys ear, for ffs, stop pratting around, signs of his complacency in otherwise excellent performance. Big games coming up, confidence grows, a win v improving Lincoln, then Pompy fixture will prove a real indicator where we are at. I would sell my left testicle to go and see that home game! And then arguably our most difficult game v Oxford. Beat those two, and we are in the chase.
It doesn’t happen often but Im going to have to disagree on some of these points. I thought Woolfy was tremendous, as he has been consistently under McKenna. There was a really tough ball to deal with, he headed it out of danger under pressure. I just know that in seasons gone by the defender would have made the easier decision to let it bounce allowing the opposition in. Week after week he makes the right decisions and his passing is phenomenal. I thought Celina had a poor game too, probably the reason for so many passes going amiss in the centre of the park allowing Fleetwood to pick the ball up and run at us. Bakinson came on and dictated play. He really is a brilliant footballer, without any question our best option alongside Morsy.
We got a good result in difficult circumstances, kept another clean sheet and made changes which directly led to the first goal.In my (and KMc’s) opinion that counts as a good performance
Not in mine. If we were playing a decent side we’d have been tested a lot more and wouldn’t have got those easy goals, it helped us that Fleetwood were absolutely awful. Then again, you can only beat what’s in front of you.
It goes to show what can happen if the ball is played into the box quickly and we have men there to run on to it, tippy tappy is all very well if you have a comfortable lead and not much time to go but it wont score goals in this division.
We can agree to disagree Hampy. I too thought Woolfy had an excellent game, but his rare lapses nearly cost us. 2 commentarors and I thought in 1st half the new Morsy Celina combo was good. I agree Bakinson played well too and added strength in the middle. But overall we have to be pleased with the good win, in difficult circs.
Cheers Bucky, I don't know why, I nearly went with 2-6 but luckily someone else had grabbed that scoreline!
this is the side that in mid week went three up against pompey in the first half, admittedly conceded 3 in the second half, how do you plan to play this sort of side ? were Fleetwood awful because we nullified them ? as another thread shows we have some absolute massive games coming up so we will be able to see if the last few games have him been just testing what he feels is the best 11, as they are sides he can take that risk against without the chance of being hammered by a better opposition ?
Fleetwood could easily have had goals had it not been for our defence and Walton. I’d rate our defensive unit as the best in the league. But they didn’t create many chances themselves, they were handed them on a plate by our mistakes and that was because we were complacent about the opposition. That goes for the players and like you say the manager in his selection. We should have set out to batter them, build confidence and send a message.
