I'm not sure. He leaves one v one at the back when his teams attack and is susceptible to counters. His teams concede alot of goals from corners. Whether they go man for man specifically at corners is unknown by myself at the moment.
Analysis I saw is that he is a fan of the the high press, win the ball back high up the field, which could suit the counter attacking teams but the press is zonal not man to man. As for corners, I can barely remember a manager we haven’t conceded them under in recent years.
I'm happy to wait and see how he gets on, but he has to effectively hit the floor running. One thing I would like him to stop doing though is referring to the players as the "Group". I seem to remember Monk used this terminology and I hated it then as well.
I watched an hour long seminar he gave about his tactics. It was extremely tedious to be honest but yes, the press is zonal. Very similar to Liverpool where they hunt the ball as a pack and as one group. The entire team close the pitch off in the area of the ball. The only ones that don't are the defenders marking the opposition strikers who are left one vs one with nobody to cover if they get beat. That allows more bodies to press but carries a similar risk to Bielsaball if the opposition beat our press. If they press the right back they will essentially not worry about marking the other wing at all and will leave players wide open trusting the group pressing to force the mistake. He also follows the Guardiola method of once losing possession then you have 10 seconds to counter press and regain possession. The one thing he didn't mention was defending corners so I had a little Google and found article expressing the main concerns (I can't find the damn thing now) from an Austrian journalist and the big concern with his formation was the amount of goals conceded and especially from set pieces.
There’s no real problem to that method but it means you need pace in your defence, which we completely lack. It’s the same problem at scum, Rangnick, he likes to play the same way but maguire is like an ocean going tanker. As you say, will be interested to see what he can tweak in one week of training. Really hoping he gets off to a great start.
Great point about Rangnik because he is supposed to be the professor of heavy metal football, yet hasnt been able to get the fat lazy lumps to press except against us
If he does go 4222 then I’d imagine depending on possession or defending the two behind the strikers will have licence to roam out wide and the two defensive midfielders will be expected to cover the full backs who will be given licence to push forward I believe he’s going to be pretty good tactically and I’d imagine him starting out with a formation that utilises what we have. Maybe we’ll see a 4222 after a transfer window but I don’t expect to see one just yet. Bielsa came unstuck with a mixture of below par performances from a few players and man to man marking no matter what was happening. Marsch is fortunate, he has a great foundation for his style of play, sort out man to man marking and give a few that boost you expect with a new coach and we should be okay
Again, it was reported that he does switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation but he does prefer to play the two holding midfielders in front of the back four.
