Ken Houghton was my favorite player in the Waggy Chillo days. A sublime passer of the ball. But even I was surprised to see him as a legend.
Not including Ash is akin to not including Bobby Moore in a list of all time England legends . It's unimaginable . It's a lack of respect . It's a downright ****ing liberty .
of course it does in both cases mate. ive seen video and dvd clips of the Carter era and just drool over his ball control as those balls would be so heavy back then. what would a Carter do with todays beach balls ? as my post above said you can only judge by what you have seen play in person. but my dad and uncles told me about Bly & Jensen also. He also said Willie Buchan was a class act as well.
In those days City used to bring old players ex-internationals who were past their time Stan Mortensen was just one, Wilf Mannion, Roy Shiner,Joe Robinson cup final goalie, Bill Price and a few more. Later there was Terry Neil, Billy Bremner. later still Ray Parlour, Mendy, Ococha. More people could add some that I can't remember.
I remember standing down the front, at the north end, and seeing Carter take a corner. Fookin heavy, wet, leather ball....as he struck it, the water sprayed out of it. Musta been some kind of geezer to bash it like that!
David Bond belongs in the 60's and 70's . Don't really recall anything of note from him since he was banned from the Club as the then HDM Hull City Reporter. Seems he wishes to continue to be controversial today. As for respect, he's not followed the club any longer than I have - indeed i reckon he's been absent for long spells over this period whilst i certainly don't crave respect for this reason.
I know this has nothing to do with the debate, but I thought was an interesting anecdote, I worked in the same company as Raich Carter's wife and in the 1977 Queens jubilee celebrations, I got Raich to come and judge our street party knobbly knees contest, and I won. That is my claim to fame in life.
I've been watching the Tigers since 1948...less frequently in recent years for obvious reasons. I didnt see any of the first 7 on David Bonds list, but I've seen the rest. In the past 65 years in my opinion there's been one true LEGEND...Raich Carter...who was in a class of his own. My list, in rough chronological order would be Billy Bly Tom Berry Raich Carter Jock Davidson Viggo Jensen Chris Chilton Ken Wagstaff Ken Houghton Ian Butler Tony Norman Garreth Roberts Brian Marwood Pete Skipper Brian Horton Keith Edwards Billy Whitehurst Dean Windass Ian Ashbee Stuart Elliott Nick Barmby
I've only supported the Tigers for 12 years so didn't have the pleasure to watch the likes of Wagstaff, Chilton, Skipper, Roberts, Carter, Jensen, Davidson etc but their status as Tigers legends has been passed down through the generations of my family who have seen them play, and they are names i will pass on to future generations of my Tiger supporting family as well as players i saw first hand such as Ashbee, Deano, Stuart Elliott, Andy Dawson, Bo Myhill and Gary Brabin. So my list would consists of Bly, Davidson, Carter, Wagstaff, Chilton, Jensen, Roberts (Gareth), Skipper, Houghton, Butler, Edwards (Keith), Whitehurst, Deano, Ashbee, Myhill, Dawson, Elliott, Brabin, Barmby and Whittle.
I started watching 10 years later than you, 1958 when I was 10 years old, difficult to argue with your list during my time watching the tigers!.
Neil Franklin, Englands centre-half (mid-fielder in the 2-3-5 formation of those days) was the first one I remember. He came to us after playing in Bogota, Colombia.
No Ian Butler..No Neil Franklin....No Ashbee. 20 is small number when you consider the club was formed in 1904..and many excellent players have worn the B&A
"...David Bond belongs in the 60's and 70's . Don't really recall anything of note from him since he was banned from the Club as the then HDM Hull City Reporter..." He was banned in the 80s I believe! He is a legend compared to any of the dross we have to endure today
Thanks mate, glad my rant was appreciated by someone. I wish **** like this didn't wind me up so much but Ash never seems to get the true recognition he deserves for his ability, resilience, loyalty and most of all constant proving wrong of his doubters.
Good to see you have sorted out your problems of site access Canada and are here at last! My husband began watching the Tigers 2 years before you and totally agrees with your view about Raich Carter. He also loved the class of Neil Franklin and that ace penalty taker Willie Buchan. Finally your declared age propels you into 5th place in the " Old Geezers Age List" just behind TigerRoo and ahead of me!
