Joeli Viridi, aged 48, a Fijian who played 2 tests on the wing for the All Blacks has died the day after Inga. RIP
Saw this on the Neath RFC website: “Neath RFC is mourning the loss of former Wales ‘B’ centre Kieron Jones who has passed away after a serious illness. Kieron came to prominence with Seven Sisters Youth and he represented the Welsh Youth team. Neath had earmarked him from an early age and he made his All Blacks debut in February 1982 in a 27-12 win over Romanian tourists Baia Mare. Neath wanted him to transfer which he did in 1983 and he played in 38 games that season including Neath’s 21-21 draw with Japan. Kieron played a key role in Neath’s run to the Cup final that season where most considered them very unlucky to lose to Cardiff by 19-24. In the summer of 1984, at the same time as another Dulais Valley member of the Cup final side Neale Harris, Kieron decided to join the police whose insistence upon serving officers turning out for South Wales Police RFC led to Neath cancelling fixtures over the loss of two highly-valued local players. Kieron continued to play for the police side in the 1980’s, remained in the force and was a regular attendee at Neath Former Players’ functions. David Shaw, Neath’s team secretary at the time, said, “Kieron was a real Neath man who never gave less than his best. He was a thoroughly dependable centre in the team that set Neath on our way to dominating the club scene later on. He was great to deal with on and off the field and an example to others – the kind of player every team needs to be successful and we will all miss him.” Neath RFC’s thoughts and sympathy are with his family and friends at this sad time.” Kieron played for Neath prior to my involvement so I didn’t know him personally. RIP
