After the Maggie's Birthday Party thread yesterday it got me thinking about my collection of Tottenham press photos. For those who don't know, that's photos taken by the press from before the days of digital photography. They often have markings on them to show where they should be cropped and newspaper stamps on the reverse, sometimes with a description stuck on. I have a pretty big collection so thought I'd share the best ones to share a bit of joy. To start with: My first ever live game was the 1981 semi final replay at Highbury where we battered wolves 3-0. Got this picture of Ricky Villa celebrating his 25 yarder to make it 3-0 about 10 years ago. Was lucky enough to meet him at a book signing a few years ago and he kindly signed it for me making it my prized possession!
This is a very famous photo due to the two women talking and playing NO attention to the game whereas all the faces behind them are fixated with the action. These type of press photos rarely come up so was really lucky to get this. I rarely pay more than a tenner for a photo and often buy a joblot and sell what I don't want so many haven't cost me anything. This photo really makes me laugh...the women remind me of the women talking over a garden fence that Les Dawson used to play in his TV show. I once bid on a very famous press photo of Jane Mansfield at White hart lane in the 50s but that went for way more than I could afford at the time.
Yeah ... that's the one. I know I could just down load it but I love the challenge of finding press ones. Never seem anymore come up since...was about 10 years ago. Fingers crossed one appears soon (ish)!
Today's press photo is THAT goal in the 1991 semi final. Gazza's in the air after just taking the shot as Paul Stewart looks on. What. A. Freekick.
Mate, have you got the one where Sir Bill welcomes the late and great Cyril Knowles to WHL? It’s in front of the main gates, both suitably suited and booted.
From that angle, you can see the GK has got no chance at all if the ball is travelling very close to the post.
Sir Bill and Dave Mckay celebrating the 1967 FA Cup Win at Tottenham Town Hall. The year I was born... 3 days after I was born we beat Arsenal 2-1 RCL RCL he was born to love the spurs
I was there that day. Didn’t go to the final but was at the open top bus tour on the Sunday. Got Alan Mullery’s autograph.
I got this one of THAT Ricky Villa cup winning goal on ebay for just 3 quid! So rare for these to come up. He signed it at a book signing (with the photo above of the semi final). I remember watching this in my room on a shut black and white portable TV. My mum's ****bag husband had been cheering at City taking the lead and was livid at my celebrations of this goal at at full time...gave me dogs abuse ... normally would have bit back and the child beating twat would have done what they did best but I just grinned and it drove him mental. Cheers Ricky...you made my a great day and a great memory
Today's photo... This is Tony Parkes saving the penalty to win the 1984 UEFA Cup Final. Clemence Hoddle and Perryman all unable to play...a rookie keeper in goal for both legs...Burkenshaw's last game as our manager...were losing until the 84th minute...Danny Thomas missing the penalty in the shoot out...the fans singing his name...and then THAT save. Great night
You know, I would swear that photo has been edited (what are the chances that you would get the angle such that the Shelf 'clock section' fits perfectly into the top left corner of the view ?? ) .
