Do you recall the riots that went on in 1981 I think, Hull were copycatting the ones in London and Liverpool, smashing Binns windows and the like, anyway I was on the buses then, and twats were targeting us driving out of station, well not me cos I drove straight at the ****ers, anyway I digress, plod were shipping in from all over Yorkshire by the minibus load, and we got chatting one night to some Sheffield lads, alright they were.
They said they loved coming to Hull cos our hooligans were a class above others in Yorkshire and they could get stuck in scrapping, which, I suppose was training for the miners strikes a year or so later.
Most bobbies on the beat are ok, it’s the **** commanders fast tracked who are the problem, look at Dopey Darren Downs, one year he’s ****ing up stewarding at the KC, this year has assistant Chief Constable, the tit can’t even talk properly.

That's what I can't understand. Time and again we've heard about how we've had 'state of the art' this and that installed (drainage, heat lamps, world leading natural / artificial 'grass' technology, etc) yet we end up with a mess like this. It hasn't been a wet winter; 'state of the art' design & technology should have no problem coping with occasional downpours ... like other pitches do in parts of the country that have way more rain than we do.
It's an honest question, what's been going on.

I thought it was interesting, especially given the cooperation between the clubs and designers at the build stage, that Sunderland have also been having issues with their pitch.

Surely it works the other way to what has been said here? A modern pitch is well drained and can cope with sustained levels of rainfall over a few days. But if it absolutely tips down when there is a match on, the sheer volume of water takes a while to clear through the drainage and leads to water logging and cutting up of the surface.

that’s how it works in my garden (though I rarely host professional football matches out there).

    Exactly
There hasn’t been a negative comment about the pitch all season
Now it’s a major problem apparently after the Fulham game cos it tipped it down

Not my field of expertise but the football pitch will have a drainage system to clear away the water, i would be surprised if your garden does.

Maybe not on here, bar maybe the odd comment, but the fact is that the pitch has been looking increasingly 'threadbare' as the season went on. Not so easy to see from the stands, but pretty easy to see when looking at camera views from higher up when they pan in. The downpours just brought it to a head sort of thing. The drainage system and the pitch technology should be able to cope, like it does in the vast majority of other FL club grounds including those who get worse weather than we do over this side of the country. Odd.

I'm hearing a rumour that the game is being moved to Brid beach with a 2pm kickoff.

More importantly, the surface, type of grass and drainage when used for two codes leaves some concern. I said the other night Wigans ground looked like a golf course compared to ours ...

Given the alleged high levels of cocaine use, and fighting, including with Manchester City's Phil Foden's mother at the boxing last night, I wonder if there'll be a Radio Humberside phone in about it?

People didn't complain about the pitch when it wasn't a problem. Unbelievable that isn't it.

Al's post about a concentration of rain over a short period on a matchday would explain the state of the pitch yesterday and for the Fulham game if they were two days of exceptionally heavy rainfall that we've never seen on a matchday before, but they really weren't. Fulham was a bit of drizzle in the morning ffs.

I have no idea what has changed, but something clearly has. We have not seen the pitch fall apart like this under such little stress before.

I don't know if you where at the same game as me but it pissed it down from start to finish. I mentioned on here during the game that someone will get caught out passing the ball through midfield the ball stopped dead. That was happening all over the pitch.

    Drizzle <laugh><laugh><laugh>
