I have just trawled through the above twice and I can't find any words from Conte. Perhaps you can give me the post number?
No one disputes we improved dramatically (although not trophy wise) up to 2019. However it also need to be recognised that we are absolutely going backwards on the pitch in term of league finishes and trophies. You said yourself, in the previous 20 year we won an FA cup and a league cup. We have to win the FA Cup this season to match that. My concern is that we are not playing exciting football or producing memories on the pitch. I still remember some great matches under Jol, Ramos, Redknapp and Pochettino but can only remember the one truly great match since 2020... the Everton FA Cup match...actually 2 .. the United 6-1 away win. Of the top of my head I clearly remember; Under Jol Spurs 4 arsenal 5 Spurs 2 Arsenal 2 (last minute jenas goal) Utd 2 spurs 2 Chelsea 3 Spurs 3 Fulham 3 Spurs 3 Spurs 4 villa 4 Liverpool 2 Spurs 2 (twice) West Ham 3 Spurs 4 Spurs 2 Chelsea 1 (first win in 25+ years) under Ramos Spurs 6 Reading 4 Spurs 5 arsenal 1 Spurs 4 Chelsea 4 Spurs 5 Fulham 1 Spurs 2 Chelsea 1 (cup final) Under Redknapp Arsenal 4 Spurs 4 Spurs 2 Liverpool 1 Spurs 1 Chelsea 0 Spurs 3 City 0 Spurs 9 Wigan 1 Spurs 2 Arsenal 1 (1st prem win in 11 yrs) Hull 1 Spurs 5 City 0 Spurs 1 Young Boys 3 Spurs 2 Inter 4 Spurs 3 Spurs 3 inter 1 Spurs 4 werder B 2 FC twenty 3 spurs 3 AC Milan 0 Spurs 1 Arsenal 2 Spurs 3 Spurs 3 arsenal 3 Pochettino Ajax, City x2, Dortmundx2, Madridx2 Barcelonax2 all in CL Spurs 5 Chelsea 3 Spurs 3 Chelsea 1 Chelsea 1 Spurs 3 Spurs 4 Wycombe 3 Liecester 0 Spurs 6 Hull 1 Spurs 7 Spurs 4 Liverpool 1 Liverpool 2 Spurs 2 United 0 Spurs 3 Last NLD at WHL Finale at WHL Everton 2 Spurs 6 Spurs 2 Chelsea 4 (semi final) These were not all wins but they were matches that live on in the memory. I can live without trophies, like most of us can. But 2 truly memorable games in 2 yrs is appalling particularly as we are also dropping down the league. Levy promised a return to this when he said we were returning to our DNA. If he is serious, then back the manager to get who he needs in to make this happens. If he is not serious then stop saying it.
Worth noting too that the whole interview hasn’t been released yet so there may be additional context we haven’t seen and won’t see until later today when (IIRC) it will come out. There’s been some clickbaity headlines from the usual suspects already that I’m ignoring until I’ve had a chance to watch it.
Yeah I thought the same when I saw the article but then saw his actual quotes and he doesn’t seem happy at all, he’s not actually come out and said he was lied to but that’s the feeling I got from him.
Surely thats the hiring persons fault. Everyone here knows what conte expects and he had previous to the current actions. At worst, levy has lied to him and contes pissed and at best they discussed this and conte has misunderstood that levy wants to develop and grow. As for contes media out bursts, again this is on levy. Conte has previous for this at basically his last 3 clubs and if levy wasnt expecting this that is just poor due diligence as every man and his dog knows what conte is going to do
From what was put earlier: Conte isnt happy this window that 4 players left (he called then important) and only two players have arrived, weakening the squad when he wants to strengthen. Other thing was taking punts on players not ready (fairly pricey youthful players like gil) but that might have been a different article
Full interview transcript here. Obviously it’s translated from Italian so some of the phrasing is a bit funny. My takeaways He is happy with the current group’s work ethic He seems to say that perhaps Spurs don’t want to win right now, they want to develop He describes the players who left in Jan as ‘important’. I think this is partly a language thing - he uses the word a lot in interviews as analogous to ‘good’ or ‘winning’, an important club etc. - but if he truly thought that about those players then he wasn’t exactly putting that into action with game time He says the January signings are two good players but ones to develop, not necessarily ones ready to win (which I think is true with Kulu and less true with Bentancur, as I posted yesterday. Both can obviously still improve though, as can any player) He finishes by saying that he realises the vision of the club is to buy players who are not 100% there and need a bit of development to be ready to win. Whether this is a terminal point of difference or something he just sees as a different experience is moot, I suppose it depends what happens in the summer. It’s a difficult one to assess. He’s clearly not entirely happy and there’s a suggestion that he was sold a different vision than what he’s found, or that he thought he could change the club but can’t. It leaves me vaguely uncomfortable though. I think there’s part of me that wants him to call out the club if they’ve bullshitted him but I also think it does the players no good to hear their coach say that most of them basically aren’t good enough. If we accept Conte’s premise that it’s more difficult to win without experienced players then we still have to assess him as a coach. He’s said many times that he wants to improve players and he should be able to do that. He’s managed that in one or two cases but I’m not fully convinced about his management of the squad. Then again we went through similar growing pains early on in Poch’s tenure and it all clicked eventually. I guess I’m of the school where sticking his head above the parapet like this is somewhat inadvisable when your own performance hasn’t been unquestionable.
This is conte he doesnt give a ****. So much so he resigned from inter after winning and was out suing abramovic when he left out club. This is what you get from conte, hard working, winner, high maintenance, volatile if unhappy P.s. i think you havr a role on levys team somewhere
Thanks King it wouldn't load but I have found it on You Tube. BTW if you want the post number it is bottom right hand corner.
Lol to be fair i only took a snippet of what you said (basically being a yes man). Not sure conte needs to prove anything. When you are a superstar and had many successes at multiple clubs its normally something else that is wrong. Not sure if conte has ever been known for mass scale youth development so it stinks of a poor appointment and that contes been misled
I don't think Conte is happy with losing games on the the trot (obviously) and he is to a certain extent questioning himself. Maybe for accepting the job in the first place or questioning the policy of JUST buying young players. He has a winning mentality (ego) and he is farming the blame for the situation (which is fair enough) it's not his squad. I think if he can see this squad progressing, and so far he says he sees that, and he can see some real progress in the Summer window all will be well. Otherwise he'll say goodbye.
What we should do of course is to buy at least one old head for the middle of this team. Redknapp who was a successful manager at this club always used experienced players to mix with and guide the youngsters. Spurs cries out for a stabilising player. You can't do it from goal and Kane has shown he lacks judgement.
I know you’re saying that in jest, to be fair I’ve been highly critical of Levy but I think it’s important to acknowledge the good when you mention the bad. Re. Conte, you’re right to an extent that he has little to prove. The manager who can do literally everything at every club doesn’t exist and never will. But I question his coaching when it’s clear teams have us worked out when we play 343 and he’s unwilling to change to 3 in midfield even when we’ve played that at times this season and looked better, and he played it highly successfully at his previous club. I’m not asking him to change to being a youth developer, though it’s clear he can improve players young and old along the way, but he’s making some odd decisions in his management of the team. That much is obvious. Nobody is above criticism and I aim to try and present the good with the bad. If that makes me an apologist so be it but nothing here is black and white.
Haha i know mate. Its hard as a football fan to agree on changing things when its obvious it isnt working and i am of the same opinion really. However, if you look at all the successful managers (conte is a bit inbetween), they all have a certain style of playing and then force it upon them even if the personnel isnt the greatest fit. Pep arguably (im discounting him as he has a cheat code), klopp has pretty much used the same style with slight tweaks, poch had his main system which he drilled in and the. Adapted slowly (from 433 to 343). Conte is still finding his feet, hasnt had a pre season and is trying to drill his style. Maybe he doesnt think 352 will be a success so is avoiding that as plan A. Everyone who has a general "system" have generally struggled for the first year or two. Its a real conundrum to say, this systems ****, your players cant adapt. If it works and doesnt work with skipp, then you need competent replacements for skipp as everyone was fine with the initial upturn in form and the fight from the team. Sticking to the system is short term loss over long term gain (unless he changes it for good) so its a matter of which you prefer
Mourinho speedrun. Freezing out Lo Celso, Ndombele and Alli, then moaning that they were got rid of is ludicrous.
4 players he wasn't using for 2 that he wants. What was he expecting in January in the current market?
