Lol! You could say that but what helped even more was him getting on the ball, passing it and not losing it. His on the ball performance was really good.

The important topic is domination of the zone they are playing. Elliott was easily pulled out of position by simple sideways movement and he followed rather than passed on a threat. inter basically dominated our right side midfield area as a result.

Henderson just didn't let himself get pulled out of position and neither did naby. they went where they felt like in possession but out of it we shut that wide zone down.

the concept is really favoured by our coaches and if you look at some underage games we have even marked out the zones for the underage players o nthe pitch so they can see where they need to be.

In short elliott should be covering that predefensive right and preattacking right chanel along with Trent (who wound;t chase back AGAIN like burnley game)

Inter walked elliott into the preattack centre area and then flipp the bal lto the vacant area and he simply couldn't get back in time. Salah picked up quite a bit of this duty second half chasing back.

elliott did well shutting of some channels and not diving in but he did want a bit too long on the ball when he got it but imo the reason he was hooked is purely down to him not being able to control his zone of the pitch

Our coaching approach can be basically described as positing players to control the key zones and this is where ian graham (the lad with the PHD) comes in with the data science and its called pitch control theory.

https://trainingground.guru/article...ntrol as,Waskett during his Christmas lecture.

this lad works for LFC. Is as simple as saying Elliot cut off the passing lanes. or Elliott did not cut off the passing zones. the science of denying an opponent an option to get in a dangerous position. Elliot was walked out of position following a dummy runner and the ball is flipped into the space where peresic is and he has acres to run at trent in a one on one.

Was a very lazy performance from Trent, I paused and rewound to show my boy how ridiculous it was that he’s 20 yards out of position and jogging - then straight after it pans to VVD bollocking him <laugh>

Having all of our squad available is such a great feeling, what a team

I think he should be rested vs Norwich. Give Milner / gomez game time instead.

I remember Glen Johnson used to piss me off for doing that - jogging back and leaving the CBs to cover him.
If you're an attacking FB and the team loses possession of course you have to rely on the CB to come across to cover your position, but then you need to bust a gut to come in behind him.

It was a weird game. At one stage, most of us were probably just hoping to hang on to the 0-0 but on the other hand, they didn't manage a single shot on target!

Retaining possession as never been his problem; plenty have moaned about him passing backwards or sideways in the past, keep possession tends to involve a lot of this.

His issue is more in creating; he believes he's better at it then he perhaps is when it comes to forward passing.

From the sounds of the enthusiasm on here, we should be good to play the U21s in the home leg. :bandit:

In the 6 role, I would much prefer him to keep it simple. Which is exactly what he did last night. But in the 8 role, there is more responsibility on him to create which isn't natural to him.

I saw Spearman's presentation and a lot of it went over my head but the concept of pitch control is fascinating. Statistically, Gini's numbers aren't impressive from both a defensive or offensive standpoint but what made him crucial in a Klopp set up was his positioning and spatial awareness. Our data analysts have access to millions of data points to track every movement of every player to help build the models of pitch control. Amazing.
