Because ‘jobs for the boys’ rarely ends well in any profession, let alone professional sport. Giving club legends free tickets and hospitality in the corporate areas is fine. Giving them jobs they’re not qualified for isn’t.
But you're arguing that every ex-player is unqualified just on the basis that they're an ex-player, regardless of how qualified they are. Barmby has been our manager, and did well at it, yet he's not qualified enough for a more junior role in the coaching staff, passing on his extensive experience to young players, and working underneath a guy who's only job in senior football was in the Belgian second division, and whose playing career if he had one, was so unremarkable that finding information about it online is impossible next to his pop star bodyguard namesake. That's just a really weird stance.

I’m sorry but there is no such thing as a midfielder coach. You can have an ex midfielder who is a first team coach who can help midfielders. But you don’t bring someone in solely for positional coaching anymore
That seems a bit backwards then. Down here we have coaches for just about anything. Didn't Liverpool bring in a throw in coach? And some other team had a set piece coach? Why have those sorts of coaches but not someone to literally coach and improve midfielders at the club? Don't we have a goalkeeper coach at the club?
I want a coach at the club to be able to talk to the team. It’s not the suggestion of Huddlestone being a coach at the club that cringes me out it’s calling him a midfield coach. He’d offer so much more then that as a coach so it’s silly calling him just a midfield coach.
I doubt anyone ever signed a specific contract as "throw in coach" or were employed on the basis their sole contribution was to coach throw ins.
Of course but I think having line coaches is still something of vital importance. Surely you want someone coaching the defenders on their shape, their technical skills (e.g. Greaves' heading) granted some elements would be universal, but I think there's value in specific coaches. Would a coach who can help develop KLP's ability be someone who can also improve Slater's midfield positioning? Perhaps, but they'd have to be quite versatile to help develop every player.
In this case yes but he's specifically there to coach throw ins is more my point. There'd be clubs that have set piece coaches and other types of coaches, not having someone to generally coach specific lines is surprising.
I think they all need to be of a general standard to deliver the sessions the head coaches want. I also doubt you're just going to employ a permanent coach in todays game where they have such a narrow field. Especially in the age of 'contractors'. There's so many ways a club can utilise ex-players, and any coach really does have to fit the 'club' philosophy at first-team management level. If you brought Barmbs in as a coach then it would be 2 defeats before the crowd would be baying for the manager and to give Barmbs the job. That's unfair to all concerned.
