Wading through the responses to the energy crisis, what with the discounts, council tax rebates, warm home grants and other stuff I've probably forgotten... I can't help thinking that this (together with the decades of energy hassle) could perhaps have been better managed if the power industries were still owned by the people? Yes, this is me saying this, and you won't normally see me going all socialist, but it seems that private ownership isn't necessarily the way forward for essential industries (who knew?) PowerSpurs would have a more informed opinion on this, though I did work for the CEGB for a couple of years.
A lot has changed in the 30 years since privatisation so it is hard to be sure but if you compare what the French government have been able to do because EdF is mostly intact I think a nationalised industry is more robust in a crisis. One of the issues with the current structure is that it's so costly to rescue poorly run private companies and there is no sensible way to look after their customers without the rescue system. There have been efficiency savings at least on measures like cost of the workforce. I worked for the CEGB from 1980 until privatisation and then in the nuclear power companies that stayed in the public sector until 2007. I am not a nuclear power fan now though... it has been very poorly managed in this country.
I agree with every word except the Scotch Egg put down , I love a decent Scotch egg , not one of those cheap ones that rattle when shaken, they can do one
Tricky things, eggs. If I have a fry up, First thing, ensure the egg isn't anywhere near the beans...or else the eggs are in the bin. Second thing, eat all the warm egg before touching any other thing on the plate, apart from the toast. Third thing, apply sauces (tomato for bacon, brown for the rest) and eat the remaining items (whether hot or cold). . Cold eggs are the work of the devil, no matter where they crop up and how much pork pie, sausage meat or any other such substance you put next to them. Properly evil.
Also, stop putting half eggs with raw(ish) yolk in bowls of ramen I always take the bastard things out and need another napkin
I know. I'm really not fussy...honest...except for eggs! I was telling a waitress in a cafe once. She did a fair bit of eye rolling and then brought my breakfast out on 2 separate plates, with the beans in a bowl.
I can't drink a hot drink in a glass...does my head in... so all the local coffee places know to serve me in a take out...mostly without audibly sighing at me Can't drink cold drinks in cups either...work of the ****ing devil... Not that I'm on the spectrum mind
I've just remembered - I won't eat burned toast and I don't like mugs where the inside is any dark colour. It's probably because I only drink black coffee and I can't see the liquid in it properly...or I'm just ****ing nuts. That and the egg thing apart, I'm just your average loony. A mate of mine from University used to eat all of the other items on his plate, leaving all of the meat until he had done so. He always did it...and couldn't explain why? Now that's ****ing weirder than the egg thing, am I right?
Oh yeah, and anything pickled can just **** right off...apart from gherkins...which I'll eat for breakfast, dinner and tea.
My daughter used to have to eat even numbers of things so I had to cut every thing in her pack lunch in two. Cheeky cow laughs at me cos when I go to eat out I have the same thing every time. Toast and jam no butter in one cafe. Jacket potato with tuna and cheese in another and cheese omelette in another. In Costa I only eat their tuna and cheese wrap. I only eat egg sandwiches from the Co op Prawn sandwich from sainsbury. And tandoori King prawn from the Indian. And prawn in black bean sauce from the Chinese. Not that I'm on the spectrum like
