I think you’ll find that being convicted in a civil court makes you guilty in the eyes of the law.

Well, whatever the case he hasn't been convicted in a criminal court so there's definitely a grey area with regards to Goodwillie. I'm not saying he's innocent but there was obviously reasonable doubt in the case otherwise he would have been charged. He probably did rape her but neither you nor me can say for sure.

In the eyes of the law he is a convicted rapist, who has also been convicted of assault on three separate occasions.

In June 2008, Goodwillie was convicted of assaulting a man in a Stirling nightclub, and was fined £250.

In September 2009 Goodwillie was arrested after a nightclub doorman was knocked unconscious. Two months later, Goodwillie was convicted of assault and received a £200 fine.

In 2012, Goodwillie was convicted of assault for repeatedly punching and kicking John Friel after Friel attacked Goodwillie's teammate Danny Swanson from behind at a takeaway in Glasgow in 2010.[69] He was sentenced to a 12-month probation order and to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.[69] Friel was ordered to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work for his part in the incident.

Goodwillie and his teammate David Robertson were accused of raping a woman in January 2011. Goodwillie was charged with rape, but the Crown Office did not pursue a criminal prosecution due to insufficient evidence in law. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority determined that the woman had been raped and awarded her £11,000.

The woman took civil action in 2016 against Goodwillie and Robertson, in the first case of its kind in Scotland. The judge ruled that they had each raped her, and ordered them to pay £100,000 in compensation. The civil case was judged on the balance of probabilities and did not need corroboration of evidence, unlike in a Scottish criminal case. Soon after the case concluded Goodwillie left his club, Plymouth Argyle, while Robertson retired from football completely. Goodwillie had asked to leave Plymouth as he was considering an appeal. In November 2017 three appeal judges at the Court of Session upheld the ruling against Goodwillie and Robertson.

    I don't doubt he's a nasty piece of work.

I think maybe being in a lower division is partly to do with it but once you get below SPL level all the teams are pretty low key. When he joined Clyde there was apparently some small protests but they managed to ride them out and I think Raith thought they could do the same.
The difference is imo author Val McDermid's connection to the club. She is a well known crime writer especially in Scotland, and once she made her stance known the national publicity followed.
Also, Val McDermid is a member of the SNP and a friend of Nicola Sturgeon who then got involved, making it national news.

Also, I think when he left Plymouth for Clyde he had an appeal pending, and was obviously given the benefit of the doubt by his new club. Easy to say in hindsight, but they should have got rid of him when he lost the appeal.

I've just seen that Falkirk tried to sign him but Raith beat them to it.

Woeful penalties from Cameroon. They all seemed to have stupid run ups with no plan of how to kick the ball at the end of them

Such a shame Cameroon lost, they had some glorious chances. Best of luck to Senegal as I don't want to see Egypt's anti-football win. They played for penalties the whole game.

Bloody hell! That clearly struck his hand. But I guess with the rules being changed the goal has to stand. Boro are level!

Well, I think United can feel hard done by. That should have been disallowed.

One where everyone thinks it should be disallowed but the rules clearly say it stands!

Laughable that if the shot had gone in it’s no goal, because it was going wide and teammate puts it in it’s a goal.
