No. He’s a lower PL level player or top of Championship level. He’s poor but not as bad as some are making out. If he was he wouldn’t have been retaining his place over the years with a number of different managers and we wouldn’t have reached the League positions we’ve reached in recent seasons. Are we forgetting Clark’s blunders? Dubgoalie’s blunders? Etc, etc. He hasn’t been responsible for almost every goal this season. He’s been poor but there are a few who have played worse such as Clark, Darlow, Hendrick to name three. Yes I would like him replaced but other positions are/were more important to address such as CDM.
I don't rate him. He wouldn't get in my side. I wanted two centre backs and Burns wouldn't have been one of them. But I'm still honest enough to watch a game and be fair to people. Lascelles and Clark did well against Leeds defensively. Hence we kept a clean sheet. Schar was our best defender in that game. Clark and Lascelles are championship defenders. Schar is lower part of the PL defender. Simple as that really. I wouldn't have had Clark as the worst defender in the squad, but on form this season its not even close - he has been the weakest link by far. I'm convinced Clark must have some issue going on away from football. No way you turn that bad that quickly. I don't know the stats but I would imagine Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie, Manquillo and Schar have played the most games this season. Lascelles the most, but I would imagine Clark and Schar have played a similar number to each other. Probably in the 10-15 range. Lascelles probably in the 15-20. Every single one of them has been **** and no one man is to blame. Lascelles doesn't encourage Clark to go running off to the left wing, or Schar to get easily dispossessed fannying around thinking he's better than he is. I've had the displeasure of being sat watching them for every single one of them games. Ritchie and Manquillo have been **** too. But I feel some sympathy for both, and Ritchie in particular because when Clark has played, he literally has spent the entire game wondering where the **** he is. As for Lascelles costing all the goals, I reckon Dubs has had a hand in more too. Its a poor collective.
Lacelles is useless and none of you will convince me otherwise. He gets dragged out of position and the player covering his arse gets the blame.
I'll try another way In the last 32 premier league games how many games have nufc won with Lascelles in the team and how many without.? Remember you said you want to win games
No im not wrong you just think I'm wrong and I think you're wrong I'll wait for you to answer my questions so we can progress
I don't know , why 32 games? Bit of a weird number unless this is a cherry picking exercise? In which case its useless information
We've won twice and one of those times it was 0-0 until he went off We've won 5 times without him in the side and had the best run we've had in years when he was injured. I'm not alone in this either...he can't play.
I'd prefer he didn't. I'm just saying that its categorically wrong to suggest he has been at fault for all the 43 goals we've conceded. Indeed he probably isn't even No.1 for goals being directly attributable. Dubravka probably takes the crown. There is no argument that Lascelles has been been a big part of a **** defence though. He has and he's not good enough. Neither is Ritchie. Neither is Clark. Neither is Schar. Neither is Manquillo. Neither is Lewis. Neither is Dummett. But these are the guys we have. If Fernandez is fit he'd be my first name on the team sheet in terms of defence. He is far better than the others because he is dependable and consistent. However he seems to have some fitness issues so I'd go Schar and Burns. Schar is not that good though so we shouldn't expect too much of him. He has cost us a number of goals too this season. He's simply the best of a bad bunch when Fernandez isn't fit.
No im forgetting anything mate and im not looking at blunders I'm looking at who's not capable and what leads to the pressure that creates the glaringly obvious. The glaringly obvious is there for all to see, but the trained eye sees the full picture. He isn't good enough for this league and he isn't a better cb than schar dummet or Clark. Clark has had a bad few months.. Lacelles years. I will not change my opinion and you won't change yours but much like the Joelinton at cm debate im confident in my unpopular view. Anyway this now had vault potential. Let's just hope I'm wrong or he dueabt start
I think everyone is agreeing that Lascelles is not good enough, but for now we do have him and not many better options. A few managers now have seen enough in him to make him not only a regular choice, but captain. Having Burn will certainly help, but unless Fernandez is fit, I imagine Howe will still play Lascelles. I'd prefer Fernandez, or failing that Schar - but I think Howe will favour Lascelles over Schar. Let's hope Fernandez can get fit/injury-free as a back line of Trippier, Fernandez, Burn, Targett, protected by Guimaraes, will make me feel far more confident in surviving relegation.
I agree he’s not good enough. I’ve said that for years. I sit in the Gallowgate End and at least for half a game watch how slow he is to think and act especially when taking the ball out of defence. That said he’s not completely useless and, for example, Clark’s and Dubs mistakes have nothing to do with him and to say he is at fault for almost every goal conceded is just OTT. We’ll agree to disagree but nice of you to acknowledge that I have “the trained eye”.
I'd probably have Lascelles as 5th choice. I think I'd go Fernandez, Burn, Schar, Dummett, Lascelles. Indeed I might even pick Hayden ahead of Lascelles because I think Hayden is a centre back. No way you can be that **** with the ball in midfield at PL level. Bit concerning the situation with Fernandez though fitness wise. Not sure what's going on there. You only have to look at the Norwich game to see he's our best defender so there must be a problem.
Newcastle United's 25-man squad for the second half of the season is: 1 Martin Dúbravka 3 Paul Dummett 5 Fabian Schär 6 Jamaal Lascelles 7 Joelinton 8 Jonjo Shelvey 9 Callum Wilson 10 Allan Saint-Maximin 11 Matt Ritchie 13 Matt Targett 15 Kieran Trippier 17 Emil Krafth 18 Federico Fernández 19 Javier Manquillo 20 Chris Wood 21 Ryan Fraser 23 Jacob Murphy 24 Miguel Almirón 26 Karl Darlow 28 Joe Willock 29 Mark Gillespie 33 Dwight Gayle 36 Sean Longstaff 39 Bruno Guimarães
GK - Dubz, Darlow, Gillespie RB - Manquillo, Trippier, Krafth CB - Fede, Schar, Lascelles, Burn LB - Dummet, Target RM - Murphy, Fraser, CM - Willock, Longstaff, Shelvey, Joelinton, Bruno, Almiron LW - ASM, Ritchie, CF - Gayle, Wilson, Wood Seems a bit better balanced now tbf to them, Personally would have like to seen Lewis kept with Krafth or Gayle omitted. Only reason I can think of for Lewis is they were sure he was going on loan to keep playing...
