Always loved John Martyn. Although I saw some of his decline at missed comcerts and bolshy appearances, I also saw one of the best gigs ever at St Georges hall in Bradford 1990. It’s a beautiful old theatre and definitely seen better days, but that night he just smashed it - captivated the audience with warm anecdotes and that almost house music- like rhythmic guitar (like on ‘live at Leeds’.) He must have had fifty joints thrown on the stage to choose from at the after party!
A busker was singing this on Bond Street station today and it brought tears to my eyes. Christ, I loved the Smiths.
Live at Leeds is genius, and it’s hard to believe that some of the sounds on it, especially on Outside In, are both live and from 1975. I never saw him live, very jealous…I think.
Top tip Sb. Sadly engrossing watch though. Certainly a very sick man and certainly metal health issues no doubt also induced from particular substances along the way (and a desire to kick the **** out of anyone if the opportunity arose). He sure could play and his voice was something else in its own unique way.
Talking of sick men.... Received this beautie in the post today... Latest album from Black Country, New Road - official release tomorrow. However this joyous occasion is tempered with the sad news that Isaac, the lead singer has had to quit the band due to his mental health...sounds like he's in quite a dark place, so sad.... so, gig cancelled - gutted, but it's more important that he gets the help he needs. Wonderful tune from the album, was so looking forward to seeing this live. You can see from this video, especially near the end, that he's a tortured soul Thank you for the music over the last couple of years Isaac
Should really put this on the Politics thread, but might set off a few people...Latest release from Paul Drapers new album
Junior out tonight to see IDLES with his pals, then the three of us are going tomorrow....cannae ****ing wait
Been waiting to see these two played live for a couple of years now... It's gonna be a bit weird going to see a band who've released two albums since they toured, a lot of material to get through
My favourite Smiths song ever…..Only Mozzer can make being hit by a double decker bus sound so beautiful.
Loved the Smiths, his words and Johnny’s music were perfect. Sadly something horrible has happened to him and he’s getting worse with age. There was a light, but now it’s gone out.
