New / Next Manager Feb 2022

Discussion in 'Sunderland' started by Wes, Feb 1, 2022.

  1. Different times though marra. Totally different culture of ownership and management, completely different challenge, different player recruitment philosophy,Keane more mature one would expect.

Players that he signed though. He is a disciplinarian, it worked at first but eventually started to have a negative effect on players, abit like DiCanio.

I see only @The Norton Cat has liked and agreed with you.

Personally I didn't see Keane as a quitter, yes I know he walked away from Ireland but I see it more as a bust up with McCarthy.
Same as when he left us he signed under drumaville but had a bust up with Short.

KLD looks to be here for the long haul, he has a long term plan and Keane must be happy to come on board with that plan.
So although I respect yours and the Norton cats views the fact is nobody knows who is going to be a successful manager at a particular club.
@Smug in Boots mentions Dyche but he could fail where as this unknown Aussie could go on to be the next Jose Morhino.

    Who knows ???
One things for sure, Roy Keane and Jermaine Defoe will give most fans a massive boost and hopefully the club/players too.

So for that alone I'm just going to enjoy the moment, and then hope we get promotion :D

Have a nice day yer miserable awld git :emoticon-0148-yes: :emoticon-0136-giggl ;)

And the 'never say die' Keane, the hard man, flounced out the moment things stopped going his way. Just like he did in Saipan (yes, I know he was making a point about the lack of professionalism in the Irish set up but if you believe in a cause and you want to achieve something, you give it everything even if your back is against the wall).

For me, with the Keane thing, it’s this.

Im fully aware we are the only place he was a success, irrelevant.

I know he totally got the club and bought into it almost as much as he did United (we’ve all read the books)

He is an icon of the game who spans generations, which always brings a list, and he’s already done it here before.

Biggest thing for me? I live my whole life on instinct and quick decisions, it’s pivotal to my private life and my work, is to trust the little guy in my head.

For reasons unknown he’s saying ‘aye, I fancy that setup’

He hasnt left a single managment role on a positive note though has he. He was a complete disaster at Ipswich after us. Even as assistant manager he has failed to show that he could become a good manager in the future, which is why he probably decided to become a pundit till now.

Keane himself admits he made the mistake of expecting us to be higher up the league and his expectations being to high.

There is a quote kicking about where he admitted it and wished he had talked to people like Terry Venables at the time as people like that knew he was expecting to much

I wouldn't necessarily use his last season as the yardstick by which to judge his time here. He took a club on it's knees and got more out of the players. To go from bottom of the Championship to mid-table(ish) in the Premier League in 18 months was outstanding.

His 3rd season, there were immediately tensions between him and Short (whereas the Drumaville lot let him run the show, Short was more hands-on) and there was an attempt to shift away from the lower end PL players we had towards a more talented, if slightly more divisive character. Ultimately it failed and he walked/was pushed* before being able to see it through but my overriding memories of RK here are positive.

I'm not totally convinced this is the right appointment, but it's going to be exciting...

I think age is splitting the fans. The young fans just look at a record on wiki and make their mind up, anyone over 35 remembers exactly what the bloke did and the context behind the stats.

Anton Ferdinand tells a tale where he went after the players at half time in a game and they felt it was totally unfair. Ferdinand turned round and said "let's ****ing show him" and went out an won the game. Even now, Ferdinand calls it brilliant man-management

I have liked your post just so you get one like <laugh>

My post was probably OTT. I am not a fan of him for a number of reasons. I also hoped we would have appointed someone very different. I am also still disappointed we got rid of Johnson. Maybe I got all emotional :azn:

If he gets the job I will hope to be proven badly wrong, as I usually am. I will always be behind the lads, even if I am not a personal fan of the man in charge:emoticon-0148-yes:

I'm 40 and I remember his time here very well. I remember singing his name for what felt like the whole of the second half away at Wednesday. I went to loads of away games that season and everywhere the atmosphere was brilliant. What a great time it was. But time, and football, has moved on.

Yes it probably did work for some players, but others it has a negative effect.
It must be hard going into work every single day and being told your shyte. The first season for us it obviously worked, but after that players slowly start getting pished off, especially if they think they are being unfairly pulled up for something.

I don't necessarily think he spends every day telling every player he is ****e. There are plenty stories about how kind he was with players and how when he did praise them they felt 10 feet tall

Keane is clearly more of a Cloughy than a Fergie as so many of his management traits are like Clough's
