Erick Mombaerts has an excellent reputation. I know a few coaches and one tells me his reputation is very good and his opinion carries weight. I personally really like this idea. He was worked his way through, seems to believe in a style of play. Success is success whichever level. You have a squad at a level as do all clubs at that level. If you win the double that is very strong performance. He has worked with young players, and with womens team. He has a rounded experience of managing people which will help him with us. I would be very happy and excited by this.
Someone who has only done it in Australian league typical cheap option to go for someone unproven at this level! Who would I go for you ask John Terry cause he was assistant manager at Villa or Roy Keane cause he was decent as out manager 15 year ago. I'm scratching mu head trying to work that out! Don't scoff at him cause he is doing the job only in Aussie league then suggest someone who has never done the job anywhere!
The problem with appointing Keane is he was a manager here, not a head coach. In fact IIRC he was usually on the sidelines during training, letting the other coaches lead the sessions. I can understand wanting him back like because his time here was fantastic, but I think it's a bad fit this time around.
Possibly mate. If you look at his posting history he went missing from mid 2020 until he started posting again this January. About 18 months without any comments on the take over, Parkinson's sacking, Poyet, Johnson appointment, winning the Papa John's, the late season stumble, the summer transfer window or anything before Christmas. Odd I think...
Rob Edwards sounds the type for me, but any modern day coach will suit the system and me, that's the beauty of it, the club is set up to run itself practically and that would be a deterrent to the chancers some are suggesting, Keane and his ilk would be a disaster imo, these betting lists are just that, nothing more. I wrote the above yesterday but did not post it , after reading through the above thread I came upon it and thought it was still relevant , it seems there are now a few more names I could add to that of Rob Edwards.
When you look around the world at football managers there are some that appear to be doing an unreal job. I was thinking last night about KLD saying interest from around the world. I had a look round (not Australia) at some leagues. I remember Wenger coming from the J League so had a look there. There is a head coach call Toru Oniki who has been manager of the year 4 out of last 5 years. Beaten only once by the guy now at Celtic. In over 250 games he has a win record of 61%. That is an unreal record at any level. He is still young as well. I am not putting his name in the hat. Just interesting to see what types of managers exist if you are able to cast a wide net. Certainly these managers make for a more interesting list to debate than the usual carousel we get.
Kisnorbo is exactly the type of manager I want us to be looking at. Young, upcoming managers with a point to prove, and no history of failure. It's a "Graham Potter" sort of appointment. Imagine if Swansea / Brighton ruled him out because "he's only ever done it in Sweden" . He's now regarded as one of the best managers in the Prem, and being touted as Pep's successor at City. Kisnorbo is lacking a little bit of experience in my opinion (in terms of longevity), but I would be more than happy if we give him a go.
The reason I think, he is a mag, is that he gave himself away when his answer to the question: what if it was your kids bombed by the Saudis in Yemen? (His boys allegedly are in the SoL Academy). His reply was my kids would not be in the Yemen. Now I know some good and bad mags. But imho only a truly callous mag could answer he did not care about kids being bombed playing football in Yemen. Cos he wants to spend blood money on players to get the skunks up the league. Nothing else matters to them.
Replace a manager who, according to rumours, the players hated, with a hot headed disciplinarian who doesnt suffer fools who doesnt get on with anybody. Out of the frying pan springs to mind as far as Keane is concerned. This Aussie fella? Havnt a clue. Might end up being crap but might end up doing the bizzo. But I could make an educated guess that he wouldnt bring the angry hot headed baggage that Keane would bring. I like the idea of having a manager of Keane's ilk, but modern day footballers rarely respond well to his old school methods. That went out the window when Ferguson retired.
Steven Gerrard is Head Coach at Villa but he’s similar to Keane, it’s mainly Michael Beale his assistant who does the training sessions.
People need to move on from Keane, Allardyce, Poyet and McCarthy. They all had there time here but we need to move forward. I'd love to see a young coach like a Critchley (no chance), Edwards, The Aussie Bloke or Beale at Villa (again, no chance) get the job. Stop making the position all about the single man at the head of the structure and more about the coaches and analysts who do the job on the day to day
There's people people like Pitso Mosimane at Al Ahly too. Near 70% win rate and two African Champions League titles. Al Ahly and Zamalek are absolutely enormous clubs so the size of SAFC wouldn't overawe someone who's done that job. I think the idea that the club is looking beyond the usual suspects is exciting but I think its even more exciting that people from far flung places are showing interest in the club.
Obviously I am thinking as a life long Sunderland supporter I should have an idea of the person we need as a manager. Whilst I could not name anyone in particular, my thoughts are we need someone who can solve the problems we have. 1. We let in too many soft goals. 2. We can too easily be hustled out of the game and dominated. The positives are we have a talented side going forward. So we need a good defensive coach who will have the players once they cross the white line are motivated and realistic to know they are in a dog fight and have to earn the right to play their game. In other words all 11 players defend and attack as a team. When we do not have the ball we press and fight to get it back as a whole unit. When we have the ball all players know their roles, in moving so they can receive the ball. Ie give to Dan Neil or Pritchard who then have options as to who they can pass to. So although in no way do I think he is an option we need a younger version of BSA. The sort of manager who organises defences and sets up fast counter attacks
But as @TheJasper says "Steven Gerrard is Head Coach at Villa but he’s similar to Keane, it’s mainly Michael Beale his assistant who does the training sessions.", if Keane gets himself a great coach he can concentrate on being the face of SAFC?
