Not long until the day where most of the UK will be buying poppies, buying charity cd's and calling anyone who has heard a gunshot a Hero

But what is a hero really?

Without going into the rights and wrongs of conflicts old and new, I do not consider soldiers heroes just for being shot at.....I don't see that as being heroic

    What say you?

It the ones who did their jobs and saved others - be it civilians or their mates along side them!

The injured ones who get basic (or even nil) support from the Goverment, that why I buy my poppy!

Also, to support the ones that fought all those years ago to make sure we stayed free and fought for teh freedom of Europe against a mass murdering physcho!

Millions round the world gave their lives to protect our freedom in two world wars.

For that I shall be eternally grateful when so many gave their lives to ensure our freedom.

I say I agree with you. If you're a fireman, in your job you run the risk of getting burnt. As a soldier, it's getting shot, blown up etc.
To me a hero is someone who shows courage, humility, consideration for others above self and who is prepared to give everything for their cause.
Unfortunately, not that many of them left.

Above and beyond the call of duty, and I don't mean sitting in your room with a pizza on your lap trying to finish off your 8th hour straight on the X-Box.

Poppies are for remembrance Sunday and are supposed to represent those fallen in battle or in the line of duty in the services. You get medals for being a hero and not just poppies.

I wouldn't volunteer to get shot at but someone has to and I don't have a problem wearing a small token to remember the fallen. Not much to ask IMO. If you are a pacifist and want to wear a white poppy then good for you too, having the courage of your convictions is admirable also.

Getting your job done while being shot at is heroic.

A bit like when school kid's throw stones at you when you're picking ginger bottles out of bins.

You may not have a choice in the matter though.

    Agree with your sentiments.

Nothing yet. I figure that if I keep all I find then eventually there will be a global shortage and I will be able to dictate the market rate.

IMO, the word hero doesn't really apply to someone doing their job.

Back in the day when everyday people of the street signed up for war then that is brave and frightening and its for them that I back the poppy appeal and its with their families that my thoughts are with during the silence.
I wouldnt say the modern soldiers are not brave but its something they get into knowing all the risks involved.
The only thing I dont agree with is help for hero for heroes. I have nothing against the charity in itself but I think its totally wrong that the government sends our troops out to protect this country but are not prepared to totally back them when they are injured

I agree to be honest. If they actually do something, fair enough. But being called a hero as soon as they put a uniform on? Not too sure about that. The ones who fought in WW2 are all heroes, but they were fighting a just war against an evil enemy.
