Maybe I’d send them a video of Valery as emergency CB when we were down to 10 against Spurs… Also if they were prepared to let us get our fee back for Djenepo then I wouldn’t be averse to be honest. As it doesn’t look like we will be getting half of that. This summer is going to be interesting in that regard as we have Romeu, Redmond, Walcott, Djenepo, Valery and Elyounoussi all entering the final year of their contract Some choices are easy: Romeu - extend if he wants but keep regardless as he won’t command a high fee on sale Walcott - don’t extend (indeed potentially try to cut short) Valery - don’t extend. Sell if a decent offer comes in but keep in the squad if not. But Redmond , Elyounoussi and Djenepo present difficult choices The first two are among our highest earners. I’d maybe look at extending Redmond if he wasn’t after a crazy pay rise. Elyounoussi we should probably try to cash in on. I would say the same for Djenepo but as mentioned I think we would struggle to get half our money back. But there could well be two or three slots in those number 10 positions. One might be filled by Anjorin whether loan or permanent. Ideally one would be Carvalho but he seems to want to kill his career on the Liverpool bench (or his agent wants him to). Maybe at least one slot will come from our B team So there will be some things of interest going on
Ahhh, that ole chestnut! There’s a few on here that always do that, making a mountain out of a molehill, when everyone else gets the original gist & accepts the tiny lapse in wording. Drives me nuts.
I think Rom will get a new deal. He’s just about showing enough to keep Diallo out but he’ll probably be quite content as a squad option and influential locker room leader for the future. Walcott will finish his deal and probably retire. I don’t envisage him dropping down a league to keep playing and he’ll be 34 when it ends. Maybe they work out a deal for him to do coaching and be a senior role model player for the B team like is becoming the norm at other clubs. Mo El is an odd one. He’s not been a disaster and I think he’s surprised a few people. He was wildly hated by some on here for no real reason but at the same time we may be able to recoup quite a bit of his original fee if clubs are interested. I think the future for his role is in the hands of younger prospects. Big bang of the Turkish Super League on that one. Redmond and Djenepo are more interesting. I think if the market develops for them then we’d feel confident of selling Moussa but Redmond is a good, versatile and smart player who would probably be useful to retain even if we’re looking to add options at 10. He’s been around and has valuable experience while not being totally ancient and clearly buys into the club ethos and tactical direction. I think he’d only move if a stupid offer arrived a la Ings.
Romeu just about doing enough to keep Diallo out? They are completely different players. Diallo is no replacement for Romeu. Not even close. We have no one else like him in the squad (and real need another as back up to be fair) Elyounoussi is disliked on here for having absolutely zero pace and looking utterly out of place when he arrived. He came on against Man City and did absolutely nothing I don’t see how a market can evolve for Djenpo as he will be lucky to get many games between now and the end of the season
If Romeu was out next game, who would play at CM alongside JWP? We have a clear positional hierarchy for those two CM roles. Just because one offers different things to the other, doesn’t mean that they are not competing for minutes with each other. I wasn’t comparing them. I love that it’s fine to piss and moan about Mo for firstly debuting in a **** team and looking ****, then what? Not looking like a world beater in a sub game against the best club team in the world. I’m flummoxed that you think there would be no possible way to sell Djenepo too. There would absolutely be teams interested. He’s obviously not moving to Barca but he has value in the market and could command a fee.
Interesting piece, in the Echo, talking to the dad of Tino Anjorin. Tino comes from Poole and was training with Saints at the age of 6, moving on to Chelsea as a result of his dad moving for work. Being local could give him a reason to join, if he is looking to move. https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/19881763.saints-target-tino-anjorin/
Straw man argument I’m afraid. You said Ely “didn’t look like a world beater”. I did not set that standard or expectation. I said he did nothing. Absolutely nothing of note. Those are different things. You might have forgotten my original statement on Djenepo in the first post you replied to. That I can’t see us even getting half the fee back. When I said that I couldn’t see a market evolving I assumed it was obvious that I meant “in which we could get something close to our money back”. Of course someone would get him. But it may not be worth selling him if the only offer is 3m from some Dutch club or the like. I didn’t think that part needed to be specifically stated but it clearly does And as to the Romeu comments I don’t know how seriously to take the claim that he is only just about doing enough to keep out someone who is no way near replacing him as first choice in a fully fit team. I am not convinced you will find much agreement
Can't believe anyone is seriously thinking about letting Bedders go at any price. He has been a really solid CB for us over the years with no more mistakes than any of the others. More importantly we need at least 4 decent CBs to see out the season. We have not been looking for a CB since signing Lyanco and Salisu so starting a search 3 days before the window closes is a recipe for disaster. Really happy with the the squad and as long as no one leaves, buys would be sheer luxury. It's a mark of how far we've come to suggest we don't even need to be active this window.
And this is why Newcastle are having such difficulty bringing one in. Most aren’t going to sanction a move with such little time for a replacement. The fact that it is to a team that should they survive will be rivalling most teams for players and blowing them out the water is another factor as well
