ThefaithfulIndian 11/2 - Down Royal 13.40 A weak race this one. This horse has shown glimpses of ability and also tends to be supported in the betting when they feel he is going to go close. Slight drift early tonight does not concern yet as most will be drawn to the Davy Russel ridden Bonnie Kellie, who won an equally weak race lto and will look to complete a double here. The selection has won some races on the flat but remains a maiden over timber, carrying a feather weight I feel they won't get a better chance to gain a win into him than this race. Worth a bet at 11/2 and it would be nice to see some encouraging signs in the market through the day tomorrow. Best of luck all.
Morning, crew. Hope everyone well. I see the ants, sorry the decs, are out for the next Pertemps Qualifer (more plots and all that...). The latest renewal is at Huntingdon on Friday (again huge thanks to Oddy for putting that timetable up). Anyone seen anything interesting, contained within, at Huntingon??? Can't say I saw anything hugely eyecatching, amongst the 14, but I do note that there are reps of Mr Ponsonby, WP Mullins (with a horse he has already tried, and failed, to get qualified) and Lieutenant Henderson. Am I missing anything re this race???
Oh and while I'm on I don't know if anyone has noticed this but my 2nd favourite trainer, Mr Charlton, has now trained his last runner - well in the guise of solely 'Roger Charlton' appearing on the old racecard.. From now on (since last weekend actually) he is going down the 'Thady route'. End of an era at Beckhampton but also hopefully the beginning of a glorious one. Good luck to all concerned at the great, great establishment.
Only 6 runners in the Proform database ran at Huntingdon in their race before running in the Pertemps final, and all six were beaten. It might not be the race you want to be following into the festival. In fact Huntingdon is 6 from 176 on last runs before the festival since the dataset started, putting the course a long way down the dataset on winning strike rate. Obviously its important to take every race on its merit, even if they are fiddling for the festival! However this isn't a race that I am likely to be worrying about for the festival. Instead I would be looking for the winner, and I expect it'll come from down towards the bottom of the weights. Interestingly it is Haydock and Warwick that are highest in the wins for the Pertemps Handicap, with three apiece. However its Fairyhouse and Leopardstown that follow them closely with two a piece. Fairyhouse has only 4 horses for those 2 wins!! I am hoping that the eyecatcher from Warwick wins the final, and he has been dropped 2lbs by the handicapper for that run. Let's just say I am peddling the chances of that one.
16:20 Leicester - Mr Grey Sky (Very lightly-raced Fame And Glory gelding. Hopeful he'll run a decent race in this final Handicap Hurdle of the afternoon. David Bass takes the ride for the Kim Bailey yard. 8/1 with Bet365 at time of writing, but 7/1 is a better indication, freely-available).
Very discouraging run. I am not sure what they are seeing at home but life over hurdles isn't for this lad now I feel. On another note, well done to those who found a winner or two today.
